Cavaliers Looks to Continue Domination in Series
This could be one of the most challenging stretches of the season for Pittsburgh with a late-December win over North Carolina followed by matchups with nationally ranked Virginia and Duke in the first three games of 2023.
Virginia is once again one of the better defensive teams in the country. The Cavaliers rank 11th with an average of 58.3 points per game and 37th in 4.8 blocked shots. The Cavaliers are favored against Pittsburgh for the 13th time in a row.
Pittsburgh is among the top teams in the nation in rebounds and defensive rebounds per contest.
John Hughley, Pitt’s fifth-leading scorer, has missed six games and is out indefinitely.
Virginia is ranked 11th in both the Associated Press Top 25 poll and in the coaches’ poll.
According to the college basketball odds, Virginia (+2500) is tied for the 13th-best odds to win the national title.
Cavaliers Looking for Consistency
With four games against ranked teams before stepping on the court in 2023, there’s no doubt that Virginia is testing itself for the always-challenging run through the ACC.
The Cavaliers have split those four games, beating No. 5 Baylor and No. 19 Illinois in a span of three days at the Continental Tire Main Event. The Cavaliers moved into the top five in the national polls.
It’s been more of a struggle recently. First came a tough two-point win over Michigan before falling to Houston and losing on the road to Miami in the Cavaliers’ ACC opener.
Virginia got back on the winning track with wins over Albany and Georgia Tech. The Cavaliers recorded 21 assists on 29 made baskets while forcing 23 Georgia Tech turnovers.
Virginia has covered against the Las Vegas odds in one of its last eight games.
Panthers Look to Remain on Roll
Pittsburgh was picked to finish only ahead of Georgia Tech among the 15 teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference preseason poll. However, the Panthers followed up a win over Syracuse in their conference opener by taking down preseason favorite North Carolina in their final game of 2022.
Jamarius Burton led the way with 31 points in the win over the Tar Heels. It was the fourth win in a row for the Panthers.

Now comes another tough test as Virginia picked third in the preseason poll, comes to Pittsburgh.
The Panthers are 7-1 at home and, despite being outrebounded in the win over UNC, the improved work on the glass has played a huge key in the early success.
The Panthers went from averaging 33.8 rebounds a season ago to 39.9. The arrival of Ole Miss transfer Blake Hinson has had something to do with the improvement – he leads the Panthers with averages of 17.1 points and 7.3 rebounds.
