Hokies Seeking Huge Upset
The No. 6 Virginia Cavaliers watched Clemson, the first-place team in the ACC, lose at Boston College on Tuesday night.
Now they can tie Clemson atop the standings if they can win Saturday’s big game against ACC rival Virginia Tech. Those who bet online know that the Hokies are a team that recently defeated Duke at home, so they’re capable.
Which team is the best option versus the college basketball odds here?
Virginia Knows it has to be Better
Virginia is doing just enough to win. The Cavaliers did not dominate Syracuse on Monday night, but they did make the plays they needed to make down the stretch to win.
Coach Tony Bennett had a bad-shooting team last season, which is why Virginia unraveled. This season’s team has been much better in knocking down important jump shots.
Virginia’s offense doesn’t collapse and disappear for very long stretches of play the way it did in 2022. The defense is not as strong or as imposing, but it’s still good enough to generate significant results.
The real question is if this team can play better, more authoritative defense near the rim and establish even greater territorial control of the court near the basket.
Those who bet online know that there is still a lot of room in which this team can grow. A road test at Virginia Tech is a good measuring stick for where the Cavaliers truly are in their evolution.
Virginia Tech Tough at Home
The Virginia Tech Hokies struggled during much of ACC play last season, but they caught fire late in the season and were able to build toward the ACC tournament, which they won.
They couldn’t do anything wrong once it captured its opening game in the ACC tournament. The team developed chemistry, confidence and energy that had been missing for much of the regular season.
The Hokies, who are 10-2 at home, rescued themselves and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. One year later, the Hokies are trying to do the same thing.
They won’t get an at-large bid to March Madness because they have lost too many games in the ACC. They have fallen off the bubble and are 3-8 through 11 conference contests.
Maybe if they can finish 9-11 or 10-10 in the ACC – which means they would win at least six more games if not seven – they could revive their at-large chances, but that’s not realistic.
Their best path to the NCAA Tournament will again be the ACC tourney.
The Hokies, having just allowed 92 points in a road loss at Miami, know they have to improve on defense to have any chance against Virginia.
Tech allowed 78 points in a loss to the Cavaliers on Jan. 18. Learning from that 78-68 defeat will be important for the Hokies as they host their rival from the Commonwealth.

Virginia vs Virginia Tech Picks & Prediction
The game should be close, so keep that in mind before making your college basketball picks. Yes, Virginia is the better team but this is a rivalry game. Also, Virginia Tech has a lot more at stake.
Ultimately, home court should give Virginia Tech the slight edge and – ultimately – a narrow victory. That means you should take Virginia Tech straight up and against the spread in the sportsbook. Virginia is listed at +1 1/2 in our Vegas lines.
