Jayhawks Bidding for Second Straight Big 12 Tourney Title
West Virginia Goes After Fourth Straight Win
Kansas was a perfect 9 for 9 in the postseason a season ago on the way to the Big 12 and NCAA Tournament championships. Now the Jayhawks begin postseason play in the Big 12 quarterfinals.
Kansas ended the regular season with a 16-point loss to Texas. However, the Jayhawks had already secured the top seed in the conference tournament.
West Virginia rolled to a 78-62 win over Texas Tech in its conference opener as West Virginia had 19 offensive rebounds. The Mountaineers have won three straight games since a two-point loss to Kansas.
When it comes to the college basketball news, forward Mohamed Wague, guard Josiah Davis and Joe Perez are out for West Virginia. Wague is one of 10 players to average more than 10 minutes per game.
For Kansas, third-leading scorer Kevin McCullar is questionable with a back issue. Forward Cam Martin, who hasn’t played since early January, and guard Kyle Cuffe are also out.
The Jayhawks will also be without head coach Bill Self. The school announced on Thursday that Self was hospitalized with a undisclosed illness.
Kansas is third in the Associated Press Top 25 poll and fourth in the coaches poll.
According to the odds to win March Madness, Kansas (+800) is second in the odds to win the national championship. West Virginia (+20000) is well back in the championship odds.
Kansas is eighth in the latest NCAA NET rankings. The Jayhawks lead the country with 15 Quad 1 wins and are in line to be a No. 1 seed. West Virginia is 19th in the NET rankings.
Johnson Leading the Way
Kedrian Johnson had his second straight 20-point game to lead four starters scoring in double figures as West Virginia had little trouble with Texas Tech in the Big 12 opener. Five of his 10 games with at least 15 points this season came against ranked teams.
Johnson had 15 points as the Mountaineers threw a recent scare into Kansas.
West Virginia has struggled to limit the offensive rebounds of its opponents but was +2 in that category against the Red Raiders with Jimmy Bell leading the way with four.
Kansas was 10 of 20 from the 3-point range in the last meeting so that will be a point of emphasis when it comes time to finalize the game plan.

Defending Champs Looking for More
With four of the top five scorers moving on, the defending national champions weren’t expected to be in contention for a top seed in the March Madness bracket.
It hasn’t always been easy, but with Jalen Wilson going from being a secondary scoring option to one of the top players in the Big 12 and offensive support coming from freshman Gradey Dick and Texas Tech transfer McCullar, Kansas found a way to win the Big 12 regular-season title.
McCullar is questionable and with Kansas topping West Virginia by just two points the last time they met, it could be a challenging assignment for the favored Jayhawks.
Kansas shot just 36% from the field in the regular-season finale so look for the Jayhawks to be more efficient on the offensive end when they return to the court.
The Las Vegas odds total has gone under in four of the last five games played by Kansas.

Kansas has won five in a row and 10 of the last 11 against West Virginia. The Mountaineers did cover in the Feb. 25 matchup, losing 76-74 as a 9½ -point underdog.
This is the sixth straight time that Kansas is favored against West Virginia with three of the last four games contests finishing under the total.
Kansas has won the last five games in March against West Virginia, with the last time the Mountaineers won in March coming in 2014.
Each of the last six games had been decided by double digits before the most recent matchup so keep that in mind when making college basketball predictions.
