Xavier Must Reset After Stunning Friday Loss
The Xavier Musketeers were in first place in the Big East heading into Friday night’s game against the Butler Bulldogs, who were 4-10 in the Big East and 12-13 overall.
It should have been straightforward for Xavier, but the Musketeers played poorly in the first half, falling behind by 14 points at halftime.
They scrambled back to tie the game at 67 late, but then came a highly controversial goaltending call on the Musketeers, which gave Butler a 69-67 lead with 2.5 seconds left.
Xavier couldn’t score on its final possession, and the Muskies absorbed a very painful defeat. Coach Sean Miller has done a superb job with Xavier this season after returning to the school.
He had previously coached at Xavier over a decade ago, leading the team to the Elite Eight in 2008 and the Sweet 16 in 2009.
Then he went to Arizona, where his tenure was marred by controversy. His return to Xavier has been much smoother than anyone expected, with this loss to Butler being the first real stumble of his season.
It will be fascinating to see how this team responds against Marquette.
Marquette Tries to Keep Special Season on Track
The coaching career of Shaka Smart was at a crossroads when he failed at Texas. Smart was supposed to make Texas a Final-Four-level team after reaching the Final Four against all odds in 2011 with Virginia Commonwealth.
He parlayed that feat into the Texas job, but he simply couldn’t get the Longhorns over the hump in March, so he sought a fresh start at Marquette. There was optimism that he could be good, but many people doubted he would be this good this quickly.
Marquette is 12-3 in the Big East, having won four of its last five games. The Golden Eagles are half a game ahead of Xavier and one game ahead of Providence and Creighton, which sits in fourth place at 17-9, 11-4.
Marquette’s only three Big East losses were all road games to good teams: at Xavier, UConn, and Providence in overtime. If Marquette can defend its home floor, it should win the Big East championship.
