Syracuse Trying To Overcome Absence of Major Weapon

The Syracuse Orange dominated to start the season to the tune of six straight victories. A 27-21 loss to No. 10 Clemson on October 22 began an unraveling, though, as they lost five straight. Still, the team finished the season with a 32-23 win over Boston College.

Unfortunately for the Orange, they will be without their leading rusher Sean Tucker, who has decided to forego the bowl game. This season, Tucker rushed 206 times for 1,060 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Syracuse will also be without their offensive coordinator, Robert Anae, who left the program to head to North Carolina State.

Quarterback Garrett Shrader will lead a Syracuse offense that ranked 74th in scoring, averaging 25.5 points per game. Shrader threw for 2,310 yards, 17 touchdowns, and six interceptions.

Against a stout Minnesota defense, Syracuse will have to find a way to keep Shrader upright, as he was sacked six times in their last game against Boston College. He was sacked 31 times on the season.

Minnesota’s Defense Looks To Dominate Syracuse

The Minnesota Golden Gophers’ defense is about as good as it gets. They rank fourth in the nation in scoring defense, allowing 13.4 points per game, and they have not allowed more than 16 points in any contest in their last five games (4-1 straight up in that span).

The defense is led by Mariano Sori-Marin (78 tackles), Danny Striggow (3.5 sacks), and Tyler Nubin (four interceptions). Minnesota ranked 18th against the run (112.3 yards allowed per game) and eighth against the pass (175 yards allowed per game).

Like Syracuse, Minnesota’s offense could be a bit short-handed as quarterback Tanner Morgan is questionable (concussion). If he can’t go, it will be freshman Athan Kaliakmanis taking the snaps. While he initially struggled in relief of Morgan, Kaliakmanis lit it up in his last start against Wisconsin, throwing for 319 yards and two touchdowns.

Minnesota comes into this contest on a bit of a hot streak, having won four of five games, including a 23-16 win over the Badgers in their regular season finale.
