  • The race for the SEC will be defined by the star quarterbacks.
  • Georgia star Carson Beck could be chased down by other quarterbacks like Quinn Ewers and Jalen Milroe.

It is no surprise that the SEC teams with the best college football odds to win the national championship also have the top quarterbacks. As the SEC welcomes Texas and Oklahoma, the depth at quarterback expands thanks to the additions of the Longhorns’ Quinn Ewers and Sooners’ Jackson Arnold.

This is my list of the top SEC quarterbacks, but it would not surprise me if this group looks completely different by the end of the season. With the College Football Playoff expanding to 12 teams, the SEC is hoping to have a lion’s share of the squads competing for the title.

If so, the quarterbacks are likely to play a major role in getting these SEC teams into the tournament.

Here’s a look at the three SEC quarterbacks you need to know for 2024.

Top 3 Quarterbacks in SEC in 2024

1. Carson Beck Among Heisman Trophy Favorites

Georgia’s Carson Beck not only heads into the season as the best SEC quarterback but a chance to be the first QB selected in the 2025 NFL Draft. A lot can change with how Beck and other quarterbacks perform this season.

Beck shined in his first full season as Georgia’s starting quarterback in 2023, throwing for 3,941 yards, 24 touchdowns and six interceptions. The star quarterback also added four TDs on the ground.

The Bulldogs made it to the SEC Championship Game with Beck under center but are looking to get back the national crown this season. The NCAA football odds have Georgia as the favorites to win the SEC at +190. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart is not running from the high expectations for Beck or the Dawgs.

And I thought [Beck] probably exceeded those expectations in terms of that last year for a first-year starting quarterback,” Smart told On3.com. “He did a lot of great things.

“Well, now this year, you got a lot of high expectations again for Carson Beck and for Georgia. So we don’t run or hide from the Heisman talk. That’s something that he embraces, we embrace.”

2. Texas QB Quinn to Be One of Best in SEC

Texas’ Ewers has not played a snap of SEC football and already enters the conference as one of the top quarterbacks. Ewers has had an interesting college football career trajectory.

The star entered Ohio State with a mullet and a lot of hype as the No. 1-rated player in the country. The five-star prospect was unable to see the field for the Buckeyes.

Texas proved to be the fresh start Ewers needed. Ewers is a major reason why the Longhorns are just behind Georgia in the BetUS sportsbook odds to win the SEC at +325.

3. Alabama QB Jalen Milroe: Plenty to Prove Without Saban

Honestly, there are a handful of quarterbacks for which a reasonable argument can be made deserves this spot. Jalen Milroe has room for improvement, but the quarterback made significant strides since being benched at the beginning of last season heading into the USF game.

Milroe did enough to get Alabama into the College Football Playoff. The jury is still out on whether Milroe will be a top quarterback selected in the 2025 NFL Draft if he declares.

Finally, Milore and Alabama will begin life without Nick Saban. The loss of Saban has Bama further down the BetUS NCAA odds than normal with the Crimson Tide listed at +1200 to win the national championship.

Other quarterbacks that were in consideration for this spot include Tennessee’s Nico Iamaleava, Ole Miss’ Jaxson Dart and Texas A&M’s Conner Weigman.
