CFP 2024 Odds: Best Bets to Make 12-Team Playoffs

  • The College Football Playoff field expands from four to 12 teams this season.
  • Georgia and Ohio State are the top betting picks to win the national championship.

It is a brand new era for the College Football Playoff system with the field being expanded from four to 12 teams. The champions from the five best conferences will be guaranteed spots in the field. Most of the teams from the Pac-12 bolted for the ACC, Big Ten and Big 12, that means that there are only four power conferences so at least one champion from the Group of Five conferences will get into the field.

The college football odds have Georgia and Ohio State favored to win the national title. It should be noted that going into the 2023 season, Michigan had the fourth-shortest odds to win the title while national runner-up Washington tied for 13th in the championship odds.

Reigning ACC champion Florida State will be the first ranked team to take the field during the 2024 season, with the Seminoles meeting up with Georgia Tech in Dublin on Saturday at noon. The college football spread has Florida State favored by 11 points. The first matchup between ranked teams will be between Clemson and Georgia on Aug. 31 while Notre Dame and Texas A&M will meet that evening.

Here’s a look at the likely teams to play in the College Football Playoffs.

Top Picks to Make CFP 12-Team Field

Georgia Bulldogs Ready to Roar

If Georgia had beaten Alabama in the 2023 SEC Championship Game, the Bulldogs might enter the 2024 season as the three-time defending national champions.

Georgia is favored to make it three titles in four years by the NCAA football championship odds.

Georgia is ranked first in both the Associated Press and American Football Coaches Association preseason polls. Quarterback Carson Beck is among the top contenders in the odds of winning the Heisman Trophy and to be the first player picked in the 2025 NFL Draft.

A Sept. 28 game at Alabama and an Oct. 19 matchup at Texas could speak volumes about the title hopes for the Bulldogs.

Bet on the Quarterback Carson Beck at +750 to win the Heisman Trophy

Ohio State Buckeyes Top the Big Ten Contenders

Could the Big Ten have four teams in the College Football Playoffs?

Ohio State is second to Georgia in the sportsbook odds when it comes to winning the national title. However, there are those who think Oregon might be a more talented team.

That could be decided on the field on Oct. 12 when Ohio State travels to meet Oregon.

Penn State will play host to Ohio State three weeks after the Buckeyes face Oregon. With the Nittany Lions not facing either Oregon or Michigan, it is not a surprise that the Nittany Lions are priced at -145 to make it into the College Football Playoffs.

Reigning champion Michigan will get to play the role of the underdog as three teams in the Big Ten have better odds of winning the national title than the Wolverines.

Bet on Nittany Lions at -145 to make it into the CPF

Change in Conferences is No Problem

Oregon, which moved from the Pac-12 to the Big Ten, has -300 odds to make it into the College Football Playoffs. Texas, which jumped from the Big 12 to the SEC, comes in at -210 according to the sportsbook odds to reach the College Football Playoffs.

Keep an eye on Utah at +195 to reach the CFP as the Utes could fight it out with Kansas State (+240 to make the playoffs) for the title in the Big 12.

The other teams that changed conferences have longer odds. Arizona, now in the Big 12, is at +600, Colorado is +1200 while Oklahoma has +450 odds to reach the CFP now that it is in the SEC.

Speaking of the SEC, Ole Miss (-130), Alabama (-120), LSU (+125), Tennessee (+185) and Texas A&M (+200) are other teams to watch in 2024.

No Snubbing the ACC Champion in 2024

Florida State’s perfect run through the ACC wasn’t enough to get the Seminoles into the College Football Playoff field last season. The Seminoles lead all ACC teams with +130 odds of reaching the College Football Playoffs.

Clemson (+180) and Miami (+200) are the other top ACC contenders even though they had different approaches in roster construction. Clemson is the only Football Bowl Subdivision team other than the service academies not to bring in a transfer this season. Quarterback Cam Ward is one of the transfers that Miami is counting on to get into the CFP.

Bet on Clemson at+180 to win the ACC Conference

Notre Dame Always Lurking

Notre Dame is still an independent but looking pretty good at -170 to return to the College Football Playoffs. Its only games against ranked opponents come against Texas A&M, Florida State and USC. If the Fighting Irish win one of those games, it might be enough to receive an at-large bid into the playoffs.

At least one of the guaranteed spots will go to a team out of the American Athletic Conference, Conference USA, the Mid-American Conference, the Mountain West Conference or the Sun Belt.

Boise State out of the Mountain West has the shortest NCAA Football futures odds at +40000 of winning the national title followed by the Sun Belt’s James Madison (+50000), Conference USA’s Liberty (+50000), UTSA (+50000), Tulane (+60000) out of the American Athletic Conference and Troy (+60000) from the Sun Belt.
