When the season began, Boise State was one of the teams from the Group of Five conferences expected to compete for a spot in the College Football Playoff field. However, the Broncos defied the college football odds by earning a bye into the CFP quarterfinals and being seeded ahead of the Big 12 and ACC champions.

Boise State will play either Penn State or Southern Methodist in the quarterfinals with a possible matchup with Georgia if the Broncos win their first CFP game in program history. The only loss for Boise State came against Oregon, the top-seeded team in the College Football Playoff.

Let’s look at why Boise State could be the last team standing in the College Football Playoff even if the Broncos are tied for 10th among the 12 teams at +5000 in the odds of winning the national championship.

4 Reasons Why Boise State Can Win National Title

1. Jeanty Ready to Hit the Ground Running

It could be that the best player in the College Football Playoff happens to be Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty.

Jeanty heads into the College Football Playoff with 2,497 rushing yards. That is just ahead of Marcus Allen, Derrick Henry and Jonathan Taylor, among others, on the NCAA’s single-season list. Only Barry Sanders, Melvin Gordon and Kevin Smith are ahead of him.

Jeanty has 12 runs at least 50 yards and 10 runs of 60 yards or longer. No other player has more than four. That makes him a popular and frequent target in college football player prop picks.

For those who think he is just piling up yards against inferior competition, a quick look at the Boise State stats shows that he ran for 192 yards in a loss to Oregon.

2. Plenty of Talent on Boise State Roster

During the transfer portal era, it is easier for teams from the Group of Five conferences to get players who are good enough to play at the Power-4 conference teams.

Boise State got transfers from USC, LSU, Indiana, California and Washington. Add that to the recruits who were undervalued by the Power-4 conferences and landed at Boise State, and the Broncos have extra motivation and the talent to prove that they belong in the field – even if some think they could be the top-four seed most likely to tumble in the quarterfinals.

Boise State shocked the world before by upsetting Oklahoma in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl.

3. Oregon Game Proves Broncos Have Plenty of Fight

Perhaps there are those who think Boise State is a one-person team. Try telling that to an Oregon team loaded with NFL prospects.

Oregon trailed Boise State in the fourth quarter when the teams met in September and needed a field goal on the final play of the game to come away with the 37-34 win.

The Boise State defense had four sacks and seven tackles for losses in the game. The Broncos have four players with more than five sacks this season while Maddux Madsen has thrown for 2,714 yards with 22 touchdowns and just three interceptions while Cameron Camper has thrived as the No. 1 pass catcher.

4. Boise State Keeps the Mistakes To a Minimum

Boise State may lose during the College Football Playoffs but don’t expect the Broncos to give the game to the other team when making college football picks.

Only 21 teams average fewer penalty yards per game than the Broncos and Ohio State is the only one of them in the College Football Playoff field.

Per NCAAF betting stats, Boise State is tied for second nationally with just eight giveaways this season – four lost fumbles and four interceptions.

With a dominant running back and a defense that has allowed only 23 touchdowns on 42 red-zone possessions by the opposing team, the Broncos will make it difficult for teams to jump out early and force Boise State to throw the ball.
