CFP Predictions: Why Tennessee Could Win National Title

Tennessee opened more than a few eyes by winning the first three games of the season against Chattanooga, North Carolina State and Kent State by a combined score of 191-13. Losses to Arkansas and Georgia (by five and 14 points) kept Tennessee out of the SEC title game. However, this is a team that could make some noise in the College Football Playoff.

First up is a trip to Ohio State, which is favored by 7 points according to the college football spread. Tennessee hasn’t faced Ohio State since 1995 so there is a sense of the unknown. A win would set up a matchup with top-seeded Oregon so Tennessee will get acquainted to see the best the Big Ten has to offer.

The Dec. 21 matchup in Columbus will be the last of this year’s College Football Playoff first-round games.

The College Football Playoff odds have Tennessee undervalued at +2500 to win the national championship.

Keep on reading to see how Tennessee can make a run at the national title.

4 Reasons Why Tennessee Can Win National Title

1. Don’t Sell the Volunteers Short

It could be argued that the Tennessee Volunteers should be the team getting to play on its home field for the first round and not Ohio State. Just going by the eye test, we’ll take the duo of Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava and running back Dylan Sampson over Ohio State QB Will Howard and whichever of the Buckeyes running backs is considered to be the No. 1 backfield option.

Ohio State scoring one touchdown at home against a mediocre Michigan team is not a good look for a team looking to get some love in the college football picks.

Tennessee is not as explosive offensively as it was in 2022, but the Volunteers did put up 408 yards in a win over Alabama so it would not be a surprise to see Tennessee take out Ohio State in the first round.

Things could be more challenging in the quarterfinals against No. 1 Oregon, but that is also a game when the Volunteers could survive and advance.

2. Tennessee Eyeing More Postseason Success

With wins in its last two bowl games, Tennessee has to be feeling pretty good about itself heading into the first-round matchup going up against an Ohio State program that has dropped its last two bowl games.

Is there a top-flight program that continues to come up short when the lights are brightest more than Ohio State?

This feels more like a game that could come down to the final possession or two and that could be enough to believe that Tennessee can pick up the road win.

This is not the easiest of brackets with the possibility of having to face the No. 6-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes, No. 1 Oregon Ducks and the No. 3 Texas Longhorns just to get to the CFP title game.

When it comes to betting online, why not take the +2500 odds for Tennessee to win it all? It is worth the risk.

3. Tennessee Looks to Send Big Ten Teams Packing

Tennessee is 4-1 in one-score games over the last two seasons compared to a 4-3 mark for Ohio State during that same stretch.

It can be comparing apples and oranges since the teams don’t share common opponents.

The last time Ohio State faced a team from the SEC, the result was a 14-3 bowl loss to Missouri. How much from that game could be used when analyzing the college football trends with so many top players opting out of bowl games that aren’t part of the college football playoffs?

4. Will Tennessee’s  Big-Play Offense Be The Difference?

Per Tennessee vs Ohio State betting tips, the Vols are second only to Ole Miss among SEC teams with 10 plays from scrimmage of at least 50 yards while the three plays from scrimmage of at least 40 yards by the opponents are the fewest among SEC teams.

In games of this stature, one or two big plays can be the difference. Whether it is facing Ohio State, Oregon, Arizona State, Texas or any other teams, that formula could work well when it comes to the NCAAF predictions.
