Florida State, Clemson Again Class of the ACC in 2024

While other top conferences are seeing new additions being touted as potential title contenders, the teams listed by the NCAAF odds with the best chance of winning the ACC football championship are holdovers.

Florida State and Clemson are expected to be the teams to beat while perhaps Miami, Louisville and North Carolina State can make some noise. SMU is viewed as the best of the three new teams being added to the ACC beginning with the 2024 season.

The sportsbook odds list the ACC at +450 to have the fourth-most teams in the College Football Playoff field and that trails the SEC, the Big 12 and the Big Ten.

The games involving ACC teams in Week 1 that jump off the page are North Carolina playing at Minnesota, Stanford playing host to TCU, Clemson being listed by the college football betting lines as a 13-point underdog versus Georgia and Miami meeting up with Florida.

Florida State leads the way among ACC schools at +2000 in the odds of winning the NCAAF championship followed by Clemson at +3000. Miami (+6000) and Louisville (+10000) are a little further back in the championship odds.

Seminoles, Tigers the Top Contenders

The ACC schedule-makers seem not to be big fans of cliffhangers. For the second season in a row, not only are Florida and Clemson viewed as the best teams in the ACC, but their regular-season meeting comes in early October.

Florida State was left on the outside looking in when it came to the College Football Playoff invitations despite a 13-0 record and winning the ACC title. That won’t happen again.

With 12 teams now getting into the College Football Playoff field, there could be multiple teams from the ACC getting into the CFP field.

Florida State dipped into the transfer portal to bring in former Clemson quarterback DJ Uiagelelei, who returns to the ACC after a pit stop at Oregon State.

The defense should be aided by the arrivals of Colorado cornerback Omarion Cooper, Auburn linebacker Cam Riley and Alabama linebacker Shawn Murphy. Running back Trey Benson, receiver Keon Coleman and edge rusher Jared Verse and linebacker Tatum Verse are among the key losses to the NFL for the Seminoles.

There are plenty of holes to fill but between recruits and transfers, the Seminoles could be worth taking a chance at +280 to win the ACC title.

Clemson has moved into the role of the ACC favorite at +260, although the Tigers don’t strike fear into opponents, as was the case when they were contending for national titles on an annual basis.

Cade Klubnik has the potential to be an elite quarterback but it hasn’t happened yet. There is plenty of talent coming back on defense. Clemson is going old school when it comes to transfers with no incoming transfers. The three service academies are the only other major college football teams with no players signed via the transfer portal.

It used to be standard operating procedure for Clemson to hit double digits in wins, but there are +120 odds according to the NCAAF lines for the Tigers to go over 9½ wins during the regular season. Florida State comes in at -115 to exceed 9½ wins.

Can the ‘Canes Live Up to Expectations

Miami is a big-name program that has not been delivering big-name results in recent years.

The big news was the arrival of quarterback Cam Ward. Miami was hit hard by outgoing transfers, especially at the offensive skill positions.

The Hurricanes were just 3-5 in the ACC a season ago and won just two road games. Miami has had some pretty good recruiting classes so the talent is there, but tread carefully when it comes to betting on Miami at +450 to win the ACC title.

Louisville finished second in the ACC standings a season ago. However, starting quarterback Jack Plummer, two key receivers and the top two rushers are gone.

The Cardinals were second only to Florida State when it comes to the class of incoming transfers, with more than 30 transfers heading to Louisville.

There is plenty to like about the Louisville roster but also more questions than answers for those considering taking the +550 odds for the Cardinals to win the ACC title.

North Carolina State (+700) will miss leading tackler Payton Wilson, but there is plenty of talent back on both sides of the ball so there could be an under-the-radar team to consider.

Virginia Tech’s Kyron Drones could be the best quarterback that few people are talking about and top rusher Bhayshul Tuten is also coming back. Quite a few players return on defense as well so there will be those who take a chance on Virginia Tech at +1200 to win the ACC.

Can the Mustangs Hit Their Stride

SMU, California and Stanford are all going into their first season in the ACC, with the Mustangs viewed as the best of the lot at +1800 in the ACC championship odds. That is just ahead of North Carolina, which lost star quarterback Drake Maye.

With SMU’s first two conference games coming against Florida State and Louisville, it shouldn’t take too long to figure out where the Mustangs stand in the ACC pecking order.

Cal (+5000) and Stanford (+50000) have some work to do after combining to go 9-16 a season ago.
