Last Game
The Panthers had their three-game winning streak snapped with a 21-17 loss to Louisiana last weekend. Georgia State took the lead with 5:25 to play on a Tucker Gregg one-yard touchdown run, but the Ragin’ Cajuns drove for the winning touchdown with just over 2:30 to play.
Gregg led the rushing attack with 99 yards on 23 carries, while Jamyest Williams carried the ball 15 times for 82 yards. Quarterback Darren Grainger passed for 98 yards and a touchdown while also gaining 28 yards on the ground.
Georgia State improved to 6-3 against the spread this season, winning its fourth straight. The Panthers are 4-1 ATS when playing on the road.
Injury Report
The Panthers’ passing game has been hampered a bit by a hamstring injury that has slowed down wide receiver Sam Pinckney, the team’s top deep threat. Pinckney played against Louisiana but managed just two catches for 14 yards.
Coastal Carolina Chanticleers
Next game: vs. Texas State
Last Game
Despite the absence of starting quarterback Grayson McCall, the Chanticleers had no trouble winning their second straight, routing the host Georgia Southern Eagles, 28-8. Backup quarterback Bryce Carpenter passed for just 85 yards and a touchdown in a game played in torrential rain, but it was the Chanticleers’ defense that really dominated.
Coastal Carolina held Georgia Southern to 233 yards of total offense and forced four turnovers. The only Eagles touchdown came in the fourth quarter after the Chanticleers had already taken a dominating 28-0 lead.
The win put the Chanticleers at 5-3-1 against the spread this season, snapping a two-game losing streak. Coastal Carolina is 3-1-1 ATS when playing at home.
Injury Report
McCall won’t be back for this game, but coach Jeremy Chadwell is optimistic his star quarterback can return to the lineup at some point this season. McCall injured his shoulder in an Oct. 28 win over Troy.
Betting on the Game
While the Coastal Carolina offense isn’t quite as potent without McCall at the controls, the team’s defense is going to win it some games as well. Carpenter will have a better game in this one without the weather to worry about, as it’s predicted to be clear and cool for this one.
The Chanticleers can also move the ball on the ground, taking some pressure off Carpenter to win the game by himself. Georgia State is allowing 29.1 points per game this season, so expect Coastal Carolina to get into the end zone a few times.
The defensive side of the ball is where Coastal Carolina should dominate, though. The Panthers are scoring 23.1 points per game, but that includes a 55-point effort against Louisiana-Monroe earlier this season.
Fifty-two isn’t a big number for the over/under, but again, Georgia State likely isn’t going to contribute to the total very much. Coastal Carolina isn’t going to have quite the same explosiveness as it would with McCall under center, so when making your college football picks, go under.
