Kansas Jayhawks vs Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Head-to-Head
Coastal Carolina and Kansas have met twice and the Chanticleers won both meetings (2-0). The Sun Belt power beat KU in their own stadium twice with the first game in 2019 being a defensive struggle with the Chanticleers winning 12-7. The second and most recent meeting in 2020 was a 38-23 win.

Kansas won its season opener against the South Dakota Coyotes. But the Jayhawks failed to cover the 11.5-point spread when betting online. KU squeaked out a 17-14 win against the Coyotes as it was a lower scoring affair than the 55.5 totals indicated.
The Jayhawks were in danger of losing until Jason Bean connected with Lawrence Arnold for the late touchdown. The underdog Coyotes outgained the Jayhawks in total yards but committed too many turnovers.

The Chanticleers destroyed the Citadel Bulldogs in their season opener. Coastal Carolina was a 33.5-point betting favorite according to the college football spreads and they covered it in spades. The team was paced by the cumulative efforts of its running backs.
Shermari Jones and Reese White combined for 162 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Quarterback Grayson McCall completed 16-of-19 passes for 262 yards and a touchdown. Coastal Carolina gained a total of 610 yards while allowing just 237 from the overmatched Citadel.

Point Spread
Surprise, surprise. The spread has moved toward the underdog, Jayhawks. It initially opened at 27 points in favor of Coastal Carolina but has now dropped by a point-and-a-half at 25.5. Plenty of betting action is moving towards KU.
Even if Coastal Carolina is the superior team here, 27 points was a lot to ask. This would mean the Chanticleers would need to win by at least four touchdowns to cover. However, KU has lost nine straight road games and is only 1-5 against the spread (ATS) against Sun Belt opponents.
Alternatively, Coastal Carolina is 8-2-1 ATS in its last 11 games and it has beaten KU as an underdog in its previous two meetings. Now, the tables have turned and it will be up to the Jayhawks to prove the sportsbook wrong.

That’s a tough ask. The Jayhawks are still in rebuilding mode and despite his late-game heroics, Bean is far from a sure thing at quarterback. This is still mostly the same team that merely averaged 15.8 points last season while finishing the season averaging 46 points allowed per game.
Coastal Carolina, on the other hand, has plenty of firepower. The team averaged 6.7 yards a snap in 2020, up from 5.5 in 2019. The team can light teams up on the ground or through the air while it also returns the majority of its offensive line. This team is firing on all cylinders and could just run through KU.
Over/Under
The totals opened at 53 but have been bet down to 52.5. This may be due to the public’s lack of confidence in KU’s ability to score. The Jayhawks did just put up a stinker in their open scoring just 17 points as the totals fell laughably under the projection.
But Coastal Carolina could just cover the totals on their own. The Jayhawks’ defense is terrible and even if they have decent linebackers, the Chanticleers’ potent rushing attack could tear up the Jayhawks. Not to mention that Coastal Carolina’s offensive line should win the battle in the trenches allowing McCall and the receivers to torch Kansas.
A slight concern for Coastal Carolina is its defense’s vulnerability in the red zone. If the Jayhawks managed to move the chains, they may get it into the end zone at least once. But that could indicate the score goes higher than the betting trend indicates.
