LSU 2024 Odds: Can Tigers Roar After Losing Heisman Trophy Winner?

  • LSU may only be listed by the BetUS Sportsbook as an underdog just once during the regular season.
  • The regular-season finale against SEC newcomer Oklahoma could determine if LSU exceeds its betting online win total.
  • Check out reasons why LSU could go either over or under 9 wins during the regular season.

This is going to be an interesting season in the SEC. Alabama is moving forward following the retirement of head coach Nick Saban while the additions of Texas and Oklahoma make the SEC even stronger this season. That will impact the NCAA football odds for teams like LSU in the SEC.

LSU seems a little undervalued with the fifth-shortest odds of winning the SEC title behind Georgia, Texas, Ole Miss and Alabama. Some of that is because Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Jayden Daniels as well as top receivers Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr. are off to the NFL.

Garrett Nussmeier had paid his dues as he backed up Max Johnson in 2021 and was the No. 2 quarterback behind Daniels in each of the last two seasons.

According to the BetUS Sportsbook odds, he is tied for eighth at +2000 in the odds of winning the Heisman Trophy.

The college football lines have LSU priced at -125 to go over 9 wins during the regular season with -105 odds to finish under 9 victories as former Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly heads into his third season at the helm of the Tigers.

College football futures odds have LSU at even money to make the 12-team College Football Playoff field with +1600 odds to win the national title.

Here’s a quick glance into the Tigers’ chances of going over or under 9 wins during the regular season.

LSU 2024 Odds for Regular-Season Wins

Why Bet LSU to Go Over 9 Wins

LSU has won 10 games in each of Kelly’s first two seasons in Baton Rouge and it could certainly happen again.

The Tigers may not be listed by the college football spread as an underdog until the Oct. 26 matchup at Texas A&M. LSU is 16-4 outright in the last two seasons as a favorite after posting a 10-2 mark during the 2023 season. While Kelly has developed a reputation of not always being able to lead his team to victory when the lights are the brightest, his teams do tend to win the games they are supposed to win.

A matchup in Las Vegas against USC on Sept. 1 will be a big challenge right out of the gate, but the BetUS sportsbook odds do have LSU favored by six points. The Tigers will also be expected to win the other non-conference games against Nicholls, UCLA and South Alabama.

LSU doesn’t face either Georgia or Texas during the regular season so there will be just two games against teams with shorter SEC championship odds than the Tigers.

If LSU takes care of business against Arkansas, South Carolina, Florida, Vanderbilt and Oklahoma and goes undefeated outside of the SEC, that would put the Tigers at nine wins. That would mean that the Tigers would have to win one game in the matchups against Ole Miss, Alabama and Texas A&M to win 10 games during the regular season.

Why Bet LSU to Go Under 9 Wins

We would avoid going with the Tigers to go under nine wins because there seem to be plenty of winnable games on the schedule.

Things could change if the Tigers stumble against either USC or UCLA, as navigating the SEC with a non-conference loss can be a little daunting.

Each of the last three times that LSU played at Arkansas, the Tigers had to work to win by 7, 3 and 3 points. Each of the last four games between the Razorbacks and the Tigers have finished as one-score games so it could be risky to assume that LSU will win at Arkansas. Recent games at Florida have also been pretty competitive so that is another game to keep an eye on.

LSU has lost each of its last three road games against Texas A&M so if LSU were to drop those three games, one more loss would result in the Tigers finishing under nine wins during the regular season.

And the Betting Winner Is …?

If LSU was facing Texas and Georgia along with the games against Alabama, Ole Miss and Texas A&M, we’d be a little leery about LSU hitting the nine-win mark.

However, Kelly has recruited well since arriving in Baton Rouge. LSU had a top-10 recruiting class – defensive lineman Dominick McKinley, tight end Trey’Dez Green, safety Dashawn Spears and receiver Kylan Billiot are all top-100 recruits.

Texas A&M safety Jardin Gilbert and Liberty receiver CJ Daniels are the top incoming transfers while LSU saw second-leading rusher Logan Diggs transfer to Ole Miss. Keep an eye on linebacker Harold Perkin, who is showing up as the first defensive player taken in some 2025 mock draft.

LSU might face an uphill battle to reach the SEC Championship Game, especially if there isn’t significant improvement on defense after the Tigers finished ahead of only Vanderbilt among SEC teams in total defense and scoring defense a season ago. The best NCAA football bet would be to pick LSU to reach nine wins and perhaps go over that total in 2024.
