Betting on the Game

Point Spread

The Mountaineers are 7½-point favorites with the online gambling support being close to even between both teams. However, the Herd have been bad on the spread in recent games. They have only covered three of their last nine spreads and are also 1-7 against the spread (ATS) when playing on Thursday.

Appalachian State has covered three of its last four games but is 6-1 ATS when playing at home as a favorite since 2020. Marshall is 5-2 ATS as a road team in this span. Appalachian State has had a tougher schedule and is the more tested team, hence why its stats are not as lofty as Marshall’s.

Still, Marshall’s offense is nothing to sneeze at. The team is averaging 7.58 yards per play while scoring 43.7 points. Led by Grant Wells, the Thundering Herd are third in the nation with 419.7 passing yards per game. If the Herd cover as an underdog, it will be because of their red-hot offense.

However, this team is prone to committing turnovers as evidenced by its choke job against East Carolina. Appalachian State’s defense is not exactly adept at forcing turnovers (1.33 per game), but it has only allowed 18 points per game.

The Mountaineers allow just 5.13 yards per play and 68 plays per game. They tend to play a slower-paced game than what Marshall is accustomed. If they can defend Marshall and grind them down to their type of game, they may just beat them by their spread. But the explosive Herd offense will make the visiting team a handful.

True to its high-scoring nature, Marshall’s recent games have gone over in 10 of its last 14 and four of its last five on the road. Marshall’s 43.7 points per game, if it stays within this range, will already be 78 percent of the 55½ totals when betting online.

The totals have actually gone down from the 57 it opened. Appalachian State’s defense should neutralize Marshall’s high-flying offense.

The Mountaineers are only giving up 240 passing yards at a 58.2 percent completion rate, which is the second-best in the Sun Belt Conference. Linebacker T.D. Roof has a pair of sacks and should lead the home team in pressuring Wells and the Marshall offense.

However, the ground game is one to watch as Marshall is allowing nearly 200 yards per game (194.7) while the Mountaineers are averaging 180. Camerun Peoples has 195 yards and three scores and could just shred the Herd from here.

The Mountaineers’ offense is solid and can drop 30-plus points on Marshall while Wells should still be able to sling the rock and get the Herd several points.

A drawn-out, run-dominated game can still lead to plenty of scoring. Given the amount of firepower both teams have, it’s plausible we see fireworks.

Final Score: Appalachian State 31, Marshall 27
