Things are starting to get serious in the race for the 12 College Football Playoff spots. The way things are looking right now, eight of the teams come from the Big Ten and the SEC. The ACC and the Big 12 could each be limited to only the conference champion making the field.

Eight top-10 teams are listed by the NCAA football betting lines as double-digit favorites in Week 13. No. 1 Oregon doesn’t play this weekend while Indiana is the underdog against Ohio State.

Georgia, the winner of two of the last three national titles, jumped back into the field after being on the outside looking in a week ago. However, the Bulldogs are the last at-large team in the field.

The college football futures had two teams with shorter national title odds than Oregon when the season began. However, the Ducks would be the No. 1 overall seed in the CFP field. Ohio State (+300) is the current betting favorite to win the national title.

The first-round games would be BYU-Ohio State, Alabama-Notre Dame, Georgia-Penn State and Ole Miss-Indiana, with Oregon, Texas, Miami and Boise State receiving first-round byes.

Let’s look at my three items of note from the latest reveal of the College Football Playoff rankings.

3 Betting Angles from College Football Playoff Reveal

1. No Change at the Top

The top five teams remained the same in the College Football Playoff rankings, with the Big Ten continuing to have three of the top four teams.

Undefeated Oregon remains at No. 1 followed by Ohio State at No. 2 and Penn State at No. 4.

With the way that the College Football Playoff works, only conference champions can get a top-four seed and avoid having to play a first-round game. That results in Ohio State being seeded fifth in the most recent bracket that was announced on Tuesday.

Penn State is seeded sixth and if the playoffs began today, that would result in the Nittany Lions drawing Georgia in the first round. It would be interesting to see what the college football line would open at in a Penn State-Georgia matchup.

Texas is third and Indiana is fifth in the CFP rankings. Something will have to give with No. 2 Ohio State and No. 5 Indiana playing this weekend.

Bet Georgia to win the national championship (+500)

2. Boise State Rising

When the CFP format was announced, the assumption was that the champions of the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and the SEC would be getting the byes into the quarterbacks.

However, with BYU losing for the first time this season, there are no Big 12 teams in the top 12 in the CFP rankings. BYU is ranked 14th and Colorado is 16th. BYU is currently seeded 12th in the 12-team bracket.

One of the teams that could have challenged Boise State for the Group of Five conference spot in the playoffs took a tumble. Washington State is no longer in the top 25 after losing to New Mexico in Week 12.

No. 19 Army, which plays at No. 6 Notre Dame this weekend, No. 20 Tulane and No. 24 UNLV are teams to watch in college football betting picks.

3. Alabama Did What?

Alabama just beat Mercer 52-7 and jumped three spots in the CFP rankings. Yes, the Crimson Tide were rewarded for topping a Football Championship Series team.

Tennessee and BYU made college football news as both lost in Week 12 and dropped in the rankings. Alabama being ahead of BYU is fine. However, Tennessee and Alabama played in October and the Volunteers won the game. The Crimson Tide also jumped over a Miami team that was idle in Week 12. That last piece of the puzzle is not the biggest deal since Miami would be a top-four seed if it wins the ACC title.

Bet Alabama to win the national title (+800)

Reigning national champion Michigan (+750), USC (+1600) and Florida State (+2000) were among the eight teams with the shortest title odds. FSU won’t even play in a bowl game while Michigan and USC have to win one of its last two games to become bowl eligible.
