NCAAF Upset Alert: Death Valley for Penn State?

Can West Virginia Pull Off Another Stunner at Home?

Things seemed to get back to normal after a wild start to the college football season as only one ranked team lost to an unranked squad a week ago.

With the only matchups between ranked teams being Ohio State-Penn State, Oklahoma State-Kansas State and Kentucky-Tennessee, could this be another week when the cream rises to the top?

Here’s a look at some games where either the series history or the line itself figures to grab the attention of those who bet online.

Keep reading for some potential upsets or at least games that might end up being closer than the current college football point spreads might be calling for.

Let’s check the latest NCAAF picks, stats, injury reports and NCAAF predictions. We’ve plenty of NCAA football expert picks for you to consider.

Penn State Nittany vs Ohio State Buckeyes

  • Date, time (TV): Saturday, Oct. 29th, Noon ET (FOX)
  • Line: Ohio State -15

Will the Nittany Lions snap a nine-game losing streak to ranked teams by taking down the second-ranked Buckeyes? Probably not. However, a look at the recent history makes it possible that Penn State could make things interesting against Ohio State.

Penn State has covered against the College Football odds in five of the last six matchups. Each of the last three times that Penn State was listed a 15-point underdog, the Nittany Lions covered with a 33-24 loss in 2021, a 28-17 loss in 2019 and 24-21 win in 2016.

It might be asking a lot for Penn State to win this game. However, perhaps the Nittany Lions can make Ohio State work a little harder for a victory than some of the other conference opponents so far this year.

TCU Horned Frogs vs West Virginia Mountaineers

  • Date, time (TV): Saturday, Oct. 29th, Noon ET (ESPN)
  • Line: TCU -7½

The last time West Virginia played at home, the Mountaineers took down defending Big 12 champion Baylor when listed by the college football betting lines as a three-point underdog. Can they do it again when the Horned Frogs come to Morgantown?

West Virginia is averaging 545 yards per game at home compared to 355 on the road while TCU’s numbers drop from 576 yards when playing in Lubbock to 451 away from home.

West Virginia quarterback J.T. Daniels is coming off a three-interception game so if he protects the ball, that will give West Virginia a chance to hang with a Texas Christian team that is coming off a challenging five-game run.

Both teams are much different than they were a season ago, but West Virginia did win the 2021 meeting 29-17.

Oklahoma State Cowboys vs Kansas State Wildcats

  • Date, time (TV): Saturday, Oct. 29th, 3:30 p.m. ET (FOX)
  • Line: Kansas State -1

The last time Oklahoma State was listed as the underdog against Kansas State, the result was a 43-37 road victory back in 2016. The Cowboys are the underdogs yet again.

Spencer Sanders is the Big 12’s leader with 2,030 passing yards. He had 344 passing yards with two TDs and no interceptions to lead Oklahoma State past the Wildcats in the last matchup.

Kansas State does lead the conference with nine interceptions so keep an eye on the ball-hawking Wildcats’ secondary.

Oklahoma State has allowed 5.7 yards per rushing attempt over the last two games. The Cowboys will need to tighten things up against Kansas State, which features Deuce Vaughn and Adrian Martinez, among the top six rushers in the Big 12.

Michigan Wolverines vs Michigan State Spartans

  • Date, time (TV): Saturday, Oct. 29th, 7:30 p.m. ET (ESPN)
  • Line: Michigan -22½

This is not a good Michigan State team. However, the Spartans have won each of the last two matchups with Michigan, and the Wolverines being favored by more than three touchdowns will certainly grab the attention of those who bet online.

Michigan State held Wisconsin to 3.9 yards per rushing attempt the last time out. That defense will be tested against Wolverines Heisman Trophy candidate Blake Corum, who is second in the Big Ten with 901 rushing yards and leads the conference with 13 scoring runs. Michigan State has covered in each of the last two games when listed as a 20-point underdog. Two years ago, the Spartans won 27-24 when Michigan was favored by 21½ points, and in 2016, MIchigan State was a 24½-point underdog and lost 32-23.

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers vs Marshall Thundering Herd

  • Date, time (TV): Saturday, Oct. 29th, 7 p.m. ET (NFL Network)
  • Line: Marshall -2½

It’s hard to read this game since Marshall is in its first season in the Sun Belt and doesn’t have a history with teams in that conference.

However, a 6-1 Coastal Carolina team being the underdog is somewhat surprising.

Marshall leads the Sun Belt in total defense, allowing 284 yards per game. Coastal Carolina is putting up almost 480 yards of offense in conference play.

Veteran Coastal Carolina quarterback Grayson McCall is completing 70.6% of his passes for nearly 2,000 passing yards to go with 18 touchdowns and one interceptions, so the Marshall defense will have some work to do.
