Purdue has held onto head coach Jeff Brohm for the last couple of years. He led the team to a huge upset win over Ohio State in 2018 but proceeded to lose 16 of the team’s next 24 games. Now, he has won two straight in impressive fashion and hopes to shut down the Notre Dame Fighting Irish this weekend to earn a signature win. What’s the best option in this game for those who bet online?

This is going to be the first matchup between these rivals since 2014. Notre Dame has shown a clear mental edge against Purdue by winning the last seven meetings against them. Their last game was one of their best, defeating Purdue 30-14. Purdue is going to have to look past their recent shortcoming and try to flip the script on the Fighting Irish in this contest.

The Boilermakers just couldn’t be stopped in their last matchup against UConn, winning 49-0. It should also be mentioned that the team dropped 35 of those points in the first half alone before easing off the gas a bit. Purdue had 563 total yards of offense and was led by quarterback Jake Plummer. He threw for 245 yards and four touchdowns, favoring David Bell, the wideout who was on the receiving end for three of those touchdowns.
This impressive offensive showcase increased the school’s streak of games with 20-plus points to 12 now, though the offense wasn’t their only unit that came ready to play. Purdue shined defensively here. They forced two fumbles, snagged an interception late in the game, and had eight quarterback hurries. That defense also didn’t allow UConn to enter the red zone until late in the fourth quarter, holding them to just 223 yards of total offense. If the Boilermakers can play even relatively close to how they performed in this game against UConn, they have a fantastic chance of improving their record to 3-0 here. However, Notre Dame seems to have their number and are a far better team than UConn. If you’re making your college football picks, keep in mind that UConn is arguably the worst team in the country right now.
Purdue linebacker Jimmy Herman is ruled out with a thumb injury. Safety Austin Logan has been deemed questionable with a concussion.

Notre Dame was able to pull away with a late-game miracle against Toledo last week. They had fallen behind but stormed back into the game late to pull out a 32-29 win. Michael Mayer was by far the standout player on this Fighting Irish offense, hauling in seven catches for 81 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Jack Coan had 239 passing yards and two scores. A win is a win, but everybody had higher expectations for Notre Dame and wasn’t supposed to struggle as much as they did. Had Toledo just kneeled the ball down and not handed the ball back to Coan and Notre Dame, they would have pulled off the upset.
The other concern here is that this was the second straight rough outing. Remember, Florida State lost to Jacksonville State last week, which suggests that they’re not very good.
Notre Dame safety Austin Collinsworth is out indefinitely following a knee injury, same goes for linebacker Jarrett Grace. Tight end Mike Heuerman is questionable for this contest with a hernia. Wide receiver Torii Hunter Jr. is ruled out with a groin injury. Quarterback Jack Coan dislocated his finger, but coaches say he is good to go.
Betting on the Game
The Boilermakers haven’t had great luck at all against Notre Dame throughout their rivalry’s history. However, these two teams haven’t squared off in over six years, which could play a major factor. Notre Dame could also be feeling the pressure of having to perform well in order to keep their seven-game win streak alive against their in-state rivals. Ultimately, Purdue has overachieved while the Fighting Irish have disappointed. If you’re looking at the NCAA odds here, be careful betting on Notre Dame ML. They can lose this game outright.
Notre Dame is the early favorite in this matchup according to the points spread as they are listed as seven-point favorites against the Boilermakers. Purdue happens to be 8-1 ATS in their last nine games when entering as an underdog but the Fighting Irish have a 25-game win streak when playing at home. Take the points here as Notre Dame hasn’t proven to be worth of laying points.
That 2014 match between these two teams ended up being incredibly low scoring, with just 44 total points in the game. This upcoming game should look a lot different given the offensive firepower that Purdue possesses right now. The line opened at 58.5 and has moved up to 59, a number that could easily be surpassed if both sides continue their hot streaks. The Boilermakers have scored over 30 points in each of their games this season while the Fighting Irish haven’t scored under 32. The over looks good here.
Final Score: Purdue 38, Fighting Irish 30
