The No. 4 Florida State Seminoles will be putting their perfect 7-0 record on the line this Saturday when they pay a visit to fellow ACC rivals, the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, in Winston-Salem. Coming into this game as overwhelming college football odds favorites, FSU wants to make quick work of Wake Forest, which saw its fair share of drama after scoring their first win in four games by beating Pittsburgh 21-17.
With the spread for this game at 20½ points in our sportsbook, will FSU make easy work of Wake Forest, or will the home team have enough to give the visitors a run for their perfect record?
For FSU, 8-0 Sounds Pretty Good
After going through the motions and lacking relevance in the college football world, FSU is back, and they want to go for it all this season. With a perfect record and the opportunity to break into the playoff scene again, the chances of stopping FSU seem slim.
Where does this leave Wake Forest? Well, nowhere good, to be completely honest.
Led by star QB Jordan Travis –one of this season’s favorites in our Heisman Trophy odds– the Seminoles continue to improve on offense every week, with their win against No.20 Duke as a perfect example. With a strong 268 passing-yard performance, capped with two TDs and an interception, all while having 62 rushing yards with an additional score, Travis feels like a lock for why people should bet on FSU.
Against Wake Forest, a team that will offer a stronger fight on defense, it will be up to Travis and his offense to make quick work of the Demon Deacons and secure the win quickly. It won’t be easy, especially with how WF plays at home, but not impossible.
Defensively, FSU putting away an offense that doesn’t offer that much punch shouldn’t be an issue.
Take Wake Forest ATS Immediately
If I were to tell you that Wake Forest won its last three games against Florida State, including a 10-point victory the last time they played in Florida, would you believe me? Don’t even bother looking for the stats; I’m all facts here. With that road win last season, plus two home wins the last two times FSU visited North Carolina, there might be a trend to keep an eye on here, one that makes picking WF a prime college football pick against the spread.
It could even be argued that the Demon Deacons already have the perfect script for how to handle coach Norvell’s team.
I’m not willing to go as far as to say that Wake Forest will be the team to hand FSU its first loss, but a 20 ½ point spread seems way too steep here. I say go with FSU to win, but pick Wake Forest ATS as they keep the score closer than a 20-point margin.
College Football Betting Pick: Wake Forest +20½
Wake Forest Defense Says Bet Under
FSU is putting up close to 42 points per game. On the other hand, Wake Forest is averaging a regular 23.1 points per game. Even with Travis and the rest of FSU’s offense fired up to continue with its perfect record and having one of the best offenses in the country –ranked 24th– I’m still going with a bet on the under as my second college football betting pick here.
Because even if Wake Forest doesn’t have the firepower it used to have when QB Sam Hartman was around, its defense is still a very strong unit to square off against. Wake Forest is keeping opponents to just over 22 points per game and plays best at home, and this could end up being a trap game for FSU.
There’s a reason why I took Wake Forest ATS, and it’s the same as to why I’ll bet the under in the total. While I wouldn’t expect the Demon Deacons to come out swinging offensively, I can see them giving the Seminoles a hell of a time on defense, keeping the score low.
