The SEC is the toughest conference in college football. Ehen its schools play out-of-conference games, they tend to dominate, especially against teams outside of Power 5 conferences.
However, when sixth-ranked Texas A&M face Appalachian State, the Aggies could have a challenge. The Mountaineers lost, 63-61, against North Carolina, scoring 40 points in the fourth quarter. Texas A&M is coming off of a 31-0 win over Sam Houston.

Mountaineers’ Crazy Comeback
Appearing bleak in Week 1, as Appalachian State was down 41-21 heading to the fourth quarter against the Tar Heels. Six touchdowns later, the visiting Mountaineers were a two-point conversion away from tying the game and going to overtime. They failed to convert, and lost, 63-61. However, not without unleashing their offense.
Quarterback Chase Brice had a great game, 361 yards and six touchdowns (one interception). He was spreading the ball around, having only one receiver with more than five receptions and 70 yards. Each of his touchdown passes was to a different player.
Nate Noel and Camerun Peoples split the carries evenly, Noel ending at 14 carries, 114 yards, two touchdowns.
The Mountaineers’ defense obviously struggled, mightily, having surrendered 597 yards (352 passing, 215 rushing, forcing a fumble). Linebacker Nick Hampton ended with a game-high 2½ sacks.
Strong Aggie ‘D’
The Aggies have high hopes in the 2022 season, with the second-best odds (behind Alabama), to win the SEC East. Starting as the sixth-ranked team in the nation, or two positions outside a playoff berth.
Their win against Sam Houston meant the needle didn’t move, but it did bring out the best in the defense. Texas A&M overwhelmed its intrastate opponent, holding them to less than 200 yards. They were also three sacks, an interception and a fumble recovery.
Offensively, the running game wasn’t consistent, 110 yards in 32 attempts. The passing game, led new starting quarterback Haynes King, had its way. He ended by throwing for 364 yards (three touchdowns). There’s still room to improve (see two interceptions).
King had a favorite receiver in Ainias Smith, who finished with six receptions, 164 yards and two big-play (total of 106 yards) scores

Appalachian State vs Texas A&M Prediction
Texas A&M is the obvious favorite in this game,=. The Aggies are the sixth-ranked team and were great last week. It’s a 19-point spread, and the Aggies’ defense is far better than that of the UNC Tar Heels. It is hard ignoring what Appalachian State did in the fourth quarter, meaning the Mountaineers’ offense may be able to at least keep the game somewhat respectable.
