The jumble that is the Big 12 standings could have a little more clarity after this weekend, with the contest between the Arizona State Sun Devils and the No. 16 Kansas State Wildcats helping with that. Both teams are tied with Iowa State and West Virginia with identical 4-2 records in league play, with BYU (6-0) and Colorado (5-1) holding the top two spots.

The Sun Devils have won two straight after quarterback Sam Leavitt returned to the lineup off a one-game absence due to a rib injury. The Wildcats suffered an upset loss on the road to Houston in their last outing two weeks ago.

Despite these teams having identical records, BetUS Sportsbook has Kansas State as an eight-point favorite on Saturday. You can take Arizona State at +258 to get a straight-up win, while the Wildcats are -315 on the moneyline. The over/under for the contest is set at 50½ points.

2 Bets to Make On Arizona State vs Kansas State

1. Sun Devils Keep it Close on Road

Arizona State has been a sneakily good team in its first season in the Big 12, though it will be tested in the next two games with a visit from BYU coming next week. Per Arizona State vs Kansas State betting trends, the Sun Devils’ four conference wins have come against teams with under-.500 records, so they’ll need to have a top-notch effort against the Wildcats.

Leavitt has been very good in his first season with Arizona State, having transferred from Michigan State after playing sparingly last season. He doesn’t have the gaudy numbers that some other conference quarterbacks have (1,631 yards, 14 touchdowns), but one important stat is that he’s thrown only four interceptions all season.

The Sun Devils will need Leavitt to have a big game as Kansas State is the top team in the Big 12 against the run. Arizona State’s top rusher, Cam Skattebo, didn’t play in last week’s win over UCF due to a shoulder injury, but he’s expected to be on the field on Saturday. Check college football news for any updates on his status.

Skattebo ranks second in the nation in all-purpose yards with 1,405 and is eighth in the country in rushing yards per game at 125.1. His effectiveness with the shoulder injury and the Kansas State defense could be a key in this one.

Kansas State is hoping to rebound from a bad loss to Houston, which rallied from a nine-point, fourth-quarter deficit to win. The Wildcats’ offense was ineffective in the second half, scoring a total of three points.

Quarterback Avery Johnson threw two interceptions in the loss. He also failed to throw multiple touchdowns in a game for just the second time this season, with the Wildcats’ loss to BYU being the first.

We expect this to be a tight game down to the final seconds of the game, so one of our college football predictions for the contest has Arizona State staying within the eight-point spread.

2. Defensive Struggle Leads to Total That Goes Under

While these two teams are ranked eighth and ninth in the Big 12 in scoring, with both averaging just over 31 points, we like this game to be more of a defensive struggle. The two young quarterbacks will have their moments, but defense will be the name of the game in this one.

As stated earlier, Kansas State has the top rush defense in the Big 12, but Arizona State is third in the conference, allowing just 118.8 yards per game. Skattebo and the Wildcats’ DJ Giddens (995 yards, five touchdowns) could find the going a little rough, meaning the passing games are going to be needed to win this one.

With so much on the line for both teams regarding the Big 12 race, playing conservatively could be the game plan for both coaches. Because of that, we don’t think a lot of points are going to be scored in this one.

When you’re making your college football picks for this one, go with under 50½.
