Big Ten Week 9 NCAAF Picks: How Will Penn State Bounce After a Tough Loss?

Northwestern Looks To Hang with Pass-Happy Terrapins

There is not a game on the Week 9 Big Ten schedule that will get the hype of last week’s Penn State-Ohio State clash. Perhaps the Ohio State-Wisconsin matchup would draw more interest nationally if not for a series of injuries to key offensive players for the Badgers, Now that is one of three Big Ten games featuring double-digit college football betting lines.

Three of the five best bets in the Big Ten in Week 8 delivered. Who would have thought that a team would have scored three times in a row when Minnesota and Iowa combined for 22 points and one touchdown?

When looking at the best Big Ten bets for Week 9, the most competitive game might come in Lincoln when Nebraska welcomes Purdue to town with the Michigan State-Minnesota game also having a point spread in the single digits.

When looking at the college football games this week, the Week 9 conference schedule gets underway at noon ET with the Indiana-Penn State and Maryland-Northwestern games.

Michigan’s CFB national championship odds moved from +270 to +225 in the last week. Michigan has the best title-winning odds for the second time this season. Ohio State’s championship odds moved from +900 to +700, with Penn State’s title odds going from +1200 to +5000.

Michigan remains No. 2 in both national polls as the Wolverines continue to close the gap on No. 1 Georgia. Ohio State is third in both rankings, with Penn State now 10th in both the American Football Coaches Association and Associated Press polls. Iowa is 23rd in the coaches poll and 24th in the AP rankings.

Here’s a look at some best college football bets to consider in Week 9.

Patience Could Be Virtue in Penn State-Indiana Matchup

Penn State didn’t score a touchdown until its 14th possession in last week’s loss to Ohio State.

This is a chance for the Nittany Lions to get some of their confidence back before the upcoming clash with No. 2 Michigan.

Indiana ranks 86th or lower when it comes to points allowed in the first, second and third quarters so this could be what the Nittany Lions need to get back to their winning ways.

Penn State does most of its scoring in the second half of games so even though the Nittany Lions will be facing a defense that is allowing the most yards and most yards per play in Big Ten games, it still might take a while for the first points to be scored in this matchup.

College Football Pick: The first score in the Indiana-Penn State to come in the first six minutes – NO +104

Northwestern To Put Up Fight Versus Terps

Maryland has had an extra week to come to grips with a three-point loss versus 3-4 Illinois.

Maryland puts up 458 yards and 37 points at home compared to 313 yards and 24 points on the road and that is something to keep in mind when it comes to Saturday’s game at Northwestern.

Northwestern isn’t a particularly fearsome defense whether the game is at home or on the road. However, the Wildcats have held up pretty well versus the pass so far this season so perhaps they can make life difficult for Taulia Tagovailoa and the Maryland offense.

College Football Pick: One team in the Maryland-Northwestern game will score three times in a row – NO +180

What in the name of Mike Rozier, IrvingFryar and Turner Gill is going on at Nebraska? There have been just 26 and 27 combined points scored in the last two games played by the Cornhuskers while Purdue has managed 21 points in its last two games.

The Boilermakers had a bye week to try to rectify some of those offensive issues. Will that make a difference?

Two Nebraska games have finished over the Las Vegas odds total this season and Purdue isn’t much better with four of the first seven contests going under the total.

There are no trends that would make us believe that the Nebraska-Purdue game is going to be an offensive showcase but we have a hunch that Nebraska should be able to exploit the most generous defense in the Big Ten enough for this game to go over the total.

College Football Pick: Purdue-Nebraska game to finish over the 39½-point total -110

Buckeyes Figure To Increase Badgers’ Misery

The good news is that Wisconsin is allowing 14.8 points per game at home. The bad news is that it came against Buffalo, Georgia Southern, Rutgers and Iowa. It is a fair assumption to suggest that nobody on those four teams is as dangerous with the ball in their hands as Ohio State receiver Marvin Harrison Jr.

Wisconsin has completed less than 55% of its passes in each of the last three games. The Badgers head into the matchup with No. 3 Ohio State without quarterback Tanner Mordecai and running back Chez Mellusi.

Wisconsin’s Braelon Allen is one of the best running backs in the country, but if Wisconsin continues to struggle to pass the ball, the Buckeyes could crowd the line of scrimmage and make life difficult for Allen.

College Football Pick: Ohio State to cover against Wisconsin as a 14½-point favorite.

Points Few And Far Between Between Spartans and Gophers

Michigan State ranks outside the top 100 in points scored in the first, second and fourth quarter so there is something to be said for the consistency of the Spartans.

Minnesota actually struggles to score in the first quarter even more than the Spartans do.

There are plenty of ways to go in this matchup between two of the worst offensive teams in the Big Ten. We’re going to say that an early score in this contest seems a bit unlikely. There is also a question of whether either team will score three times on Saturday.

College Football Pick: A team in the Michigan State-Minnesota game will score three times in a row – NO +156
