1. UNC RB Hampton Likely Pick to Get into End Zone

The best player to take when you’re betting online for a touchdown scorer in this game is North Carolina running back Omarion Hampton. The junior scored 15 touchdowns in 2023 and, with Maye gone, the Tar Heels should be relying on the ground attack even more.

Hampton led the ACC with 253 rushing attempts in 2023, accumulating 1,504 yards on the ground. He was also active in the passing game, making 29 receptions and finding the end zone once.

Minnesota’s defense is going to get a stiff test to open the season. The Golden Gophers finished 10th in the Big Ten in rushing defense in 2023, allowing 149.1 yards per game and giving up 19 touchdowns on the ground.

Hampton begins his quest for All-American honors with a big game against the Gophers, scoring at least once in the season opener.

2. Minnesota Hoping for More From RB Taylor

While the optimism around the Golden Gophers’ program heading into the season comes somewhat from Brosmer taking over the controls of the offense, there is also a lot for the return to health of Darius Taylor. The sophomore was limited to just six games in 2023 thanks to a soft tissue injury.

But in those six games, Taylor did enough to lead the Golden Gophers in rushing with 799 yards, scoring five times. He earned three straight Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors as well, and Minnesota is hoping he can hit the ground running like he did in his first collegiate season.

One problem may be a leg injury that Taylor suffered in practice about 10 days ago, but Gophers coach PJ Fleck downplayed the injury, saying he expects his running back to be ready.

“He’s doing great. I’m going to use the same line as we get in 10 days before game day, the injury report will come out two hours before kickoff,” Fleck said.
