The Florida State Seminoles have a chance to get their season turned around in a big way Saturday by knocking off the unbeaten Clemson Tigers in ACC play at home.
The Seminoles opened the season at 4-0 but have stumbled in their last two games against Wake Forest and North Carolina State with the offense generating 38 total points, including a season-low 17 points in the last game against the Wolfpack.
The offense was stymied in the second half by dropped passes, penalties and turnovers, things they will need to eliminate to have a chance against the Tigers.
“Nobody wants to have a disappointing outcome in any game or any play, but it’s how you choose to respond is really what’s indicative of the character that you have,” head coach Mike Norvell told the media. “I love this team and I love the mindset.”
The Tigers took care of business on the road at Boston College and now face a tough stretch of games at the Seminoles, home vs. Syracuse and at Notre Dame.
Beaux Collins, a 6-3, 210-pound receiver out of Los Angeles, has been the top red-zone target for quarterback DJ Uiagalelei, catching a touchdown in five of the six games.
Collins is one of seven players to catch a touchdown this season and one of seven with 10 or more receptions for Clemson, who have scored on all 32 red zone trips this year.
The Seminoles may have to make do without their top running back Treshaun Ward, who left Saturday’s game in the second quarter with an arm injury and never returned.
The sophomore, who had five carries for 51 yards prior to departing the last game, leads the team in carries (72) and rushing yards (488) and has three rushing touchdowns.
“Tre is extremely talented and his durability is something that’s been such a strength,” Norvell told the media. “I know he is going to do everything in his power to be available.”
Trey Benson and Lawrance Toafili, who have combined for 89 rushes for 480 yards and seven touchdowns, could carry more of the load for the Seminoles, whose 26th-ranked rushing attack also receives 5.6 yards per carry from quarterback Jordan Travis.
As it is, the Seminoles may have to pass to have a chance as Clemson boasts the No. 2 ranked rushing defense in the FBS in terms of yards per game (63.7) and rush (2.2).
The defense, led by senior Xavier Thomas, rose to the occasion against the Eagles with four sacks, 11 tackles for loss, eight passes defended and 13 quarterback hurries
Thomas saw his first game action this season after returning from foot surgery and only played on obvious passing downs but was able to come up with a pair of sacks.
“He’s not ready to go 60 plays or anything like that yet, but don’t need him to,” head coach Dabo Swinney told the media of Thomas, who has 13½ career sacks. “We just need him to show up, be a factor and keep working his way back to a full go.”
Only four teams in the FBS have more than the 48 tackles for loss the Tigers have racked up this season, including 5½ for K.J. Henry and 4½ for Tyler Davis.

Clemson vs Florida State Prediction
The college football lines have the Tigers as 4-point favorites against the spread and -170 on the money line on the road. Clemson is 3-3 against the spread this season.
The Seminoles did a solid job of limiting Uiagalelei last season but still lost the game by 10 points. While it is tempting to pick the upset, Florida State doesn’t have enough.
