No. 4 Tigers Huge Favorites in Opener
The weight of the entire Clemson football team will be on the shoulders of quarterback DJ Uiagalelei when the No. 4 Tigers open the season on Monday night against Georgia Tech. Uiagalelei bore the brunt for the failures of many players, including his own, last season as the Tigers struggled to win 10 games.
“It wasn’t all on him. The locker room knows that. A lot of fans don’t,” defensive end K.J. Henry told the media. “He’s done a great job of taking it on the chest. That’s the leader every team wants to see in a quarterback.”

It is now or never for Georgia Tech head coach Geoff Collins, who is 9-25 overall and 7-18 in the ACC in three seasons with the Yellow Jackets. Collins’ starting quarterback, Jeff Sims, is probably under the same type of pressure entering his third season. Sims has played well in spurts, but through injuries and ineffectiveness, has yet to move the program forward. With Simms on the field last season, the Yellow Jackets averaged 29.7 points and 431 yards. Without him, the numbers dropped to 16.7 and 303. Sims, who has a new offensive coordinator in Chip Long and quarterbacks coach in Chris Weinke, was unable to play in last season’s matchup with Clemson due to injury.
According to the college football lines, Clemson (+1,000) is the fourth choice in the betting to win the national championship. Georgia Tech is listed at +25000.
The Tigers (-140) are a prohibitive favorite on the college football odds to win ACC while the Yellow Jackets (+15,000) are the third-longest choice, ahead of Syracuse and Duke.
Let’s check the latest predictions, stats, injury reports, and NCAA football odds for Clemson vs Georgia Tech.
Clemson Tigers
Will Shipley should be poised to make a big leap in his second season with the Clemson Tigers. The sophomore, who was a top 25 recruit and the No. 1-rated player out of North Carolina coming out of high school, led Clemson in rushing attempts, yards, and touchdowns. Both of his main backups – Kobe Pace and Phil Mafah – also return so Dabo Swinney’s team should be well situated in the backfield. A name familiar to football fans – Jeremiah Trotter, Jr. – will play a big role for the Clemson defense at one of the linebacker sports.
Trotter played sparingly as a freshman after arriving as a top 10 recruit but is expected to combine with Barrett Carter and Trenton Simpson, who had 78 tackles, six sacks, and 12 tackles for loss last season, to limit the opposition. Nate Wiggins will help to fill one of the cornerback spots for the Tigers, who lost Andrew Booth and Mario Goodrich to the NFL. Wiggins’ commitment to improving has garnered rave reviews from Swinney and his fellow players.
“That’s the biggest thing I saw was him really buying into what it takes to not just be good, but be great,” Swinney told the media. “He can do it, but maturity is his only limitation. I’m really glad we have him.”
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
The Georgia Tech offense not only lost one of its top playmakers in running back Jahmyr Gibbs, who transferred to Alabama, but it will be operating behind an offensive line comprised of freshmen and sophomores. True freshman R.J. Adams won the starting job at right tackle and will help to clear the way for Hassan Hall, a transfer from Louisville who is expected to fill part of the void left by Gibbs. Hall had 3,843 all-purpose yards and 13 touchdowns in four seasons with the Cardinals. Dontae Smith, who averaged 5.6 yards per carry last season, will also tote the rock for the Yellow Jackets. E.J. Jenkins, who did little last season in his lone season at South Carolina after transferring there from St. Francis (PA), is listed atop the depth chart at wide receiver. Returnee Malachi Carter will also be a big factor in the passing game.
Clemson vs Georgia Tech Injury Report
Clemson defensive lineman Xavier Thomas was injured in last weekend’s scrimmage and is questionable for this game, although no official announcement has been made.
Clemson vs Georgia Tech Head-to-Head
The Tigers have won seven straight games in the series, averaging 40.1 points in the process. Clemson’s average margin of victory in the seven wins has been 27.1 points, but last season’s 14-8 victory at Clemson was the only one decided by single digits.
The Yellow Jackets lead the all-time series 50-34-2 and their last two victories in 2011 and 2014 were in Atlanta, the site of Monday’s matchup.

Clemson vs Georgia Tech Betting Lines
Clemson vs Georgia Tech Prediction
Clemson is a big favorite in this one both against the spread (-23 points) and on the money line (-2000), but that might say more about Georgia Tech than the Tigers.
Four of the last seven games between these teams surpassed 51 points, which is the over/under for this contest. The over seems like the safest bet for a season opener.
