The eighth-ranked SMU Mustangs are the pick to win the ACC Championship Game against the No. 17 Clemson Tigers to end their first season in the league on Saturday in Charlotte, N.C.
The Mustangs are a slight favorite in the college football odds to win their 10th straight game since the lone loss on Sept. 6 against BYU (18-15). SMU is fifth in the nation in scoring (39.2) and won by one score just twice in the last nine games.
Clemson snuck into the championship game after Miami was upset at Syracuse on Saturday night. The Tigers dropped a 17-14 decision against South Carolina on Saturday and their only ACC loss came against Louisville, which SMU beat 34-27 in October.
Both teams have explosive offenses with productive quarterbacks, but the game may come down to which defense can make a few big plays. Neither team is guaranteed a spot in the NCAA playoff without a win, so the pressure will be intense.

Running back Brashard Smith keys the Mustangs’ attack with 1,157 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground. Smith has also caught three TD passes from quarterback Kevin Jennings (19 scoring strikes, seven interceptions)

Eight players boast at least 261 yards receiving from Jennings, who has also run for four scores. SMU, which has won at least 10 games in two straight seasons, should be hard to stop. We think the Mustangs can contain Clemson enough for our college football best bets.

The Tigers have been the ACC football kingpin the last decade and they will not be a pushover on Saturday.
Clemson has not been as prolific offensively over the last four games – excluding the non-league game against the Citadel – and it will have to produce on offense to win this one.
The Tigers coughed up a lead in the final 7 minutes for a 17-14 loss to South Carolina on Saturday and have averaged just over 20 points in the last four against FBS opponents.
Per Clemson vs SMU stats, Tigers quarterback Cade Klubnik has thrown for over 3,000 yards and 29 scores while rushing for seven – none bigger than his 50-yard sprint that beat Pittsburgh and got Clemson into this game.

Phil Mafah (1,078 yards, eight rushing TDs) and Antonio Williams (66 catches, 788 yards, 10 receiving TDs) must also come up big, but it probably comes down to whether the Tigers’ defense wins the game.

Both offenses have been lethal at times, but with so much on the line you would expect the scoring to be a little lower than expected. Clemson gives up 21.6 points per game and SMU 19.8, but the over/under number is set at 56½.
The Mustangs are tied for 11th in the nation in sacks (37) and tied for 13th in interceptions (15). The Tigers have 31 sacks, led by T.J. Parker’s 10.
