James Madison has won three of the four previous meetings with Coastal Carolina. Since both teams joined the Sun Belt, JMU won 47-7 as a 15.5-point favorite at home and 56-14 in 2022 and 56-14 as a four-point road favorite last season. Both games landed over the total.

1. Chanticleers Hope to Hang Around as a Road Underdog

If Coastal Carolina plans on making a run at the Sun Belt title and being in contention for the Group of Five spot in the College Football Playoff field, the Chanticleers need to put on a better showing against James Madison than they did in the previous two seasons.

This is the second season in a row that James Madison heads into the Coastal Carolina showdown coming off a loss. The Dukes rolled to a 56-14 win in the 2023 game. Both teams have been tested early in the season with James Madison going into Chapel Hill and scoring 70 points on North Carolina while Coastal Carolina’s lone loss came to another ACC team in Virginia.

Don’t expect another 42-point win for the Dukes. Unless you include a James Madison win in a parlay, there isn’t much value from picking the Dukes at -350 to win the game outright. This does not figure to be a 17-14 defensive slugfest with two of the top quarterbacks in the Sun Belt taking the field. Ethan Vasko of Coastal Carolina leads all qualified quarterbacks in the Sun Belt with an average of 10 yards per passing attempt. James Madison’s Alonza Barnett is tied for second in the conference with 12 touchdown passes.

When looking at potential college football player prop options, keep in mind that four different players have at least two touchdown catches while Terrence Spence has three of the Dukes’ conference-leading 10 interceptions.
