Duke Blue Devils
The Blue Devils made a stirring comeback against rival North Carolina this past Saturday, scoring 14 fourth-quarter points to take a 35-31 lead.
However, they allowed a late touchdown on a great play by North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye to lose to the Tar Heels, 38-35.
The game was encouraging on many levels for Duke, which was horrible last season in the final year of the David Cutcliffe era.
The program ran out of steam under Cutcliffe, an aging coach who had battled health problems and simply did not have the energy to tend to all the aspects of the job.
New coach Mike Elko has breathed energy into the Blue Devils, and it was apparent that they were able to play UNC on even terms.
They were fundamentally the equal of North Carolina, which has recruited well under head coach Mack Brown.
It was a bitter defeat to the Tar Heels, but the closeness of the game showed that Duke football is definitely improving and moving in the right direction. The question for those who bet online is can they carry this over to a road trip to Miami?
Miami Hurricanes
The Hurricanes got a much-needed win over Virginia Tech after several damaging losses, including a loss to North Carolina two weeks ago.
The Hurricanes got off to a good start on offense with quarterback Tyler Van Dyke completing 15 of his first 22 passes and looking better than he had in previous weeks. Remember, he had been benched in favor of Jake Garcia recently.
Miami was able to build an early lead, something it has regularly failed to do this season.
Then, after building a lead, the defense was able to hold the fort and not allow the big plays which had harmed this team in previous weeks, especially against Middle Tennessee.
Miami allowed 14 points and was able to score a 20-14 road win in the ACC, which should not be taken for granted in a division has evenly matched as the ACC Coastal is in 2022.
Did they finally find a building block for the road ahead? It’s hard to tell with this squad as it’s often one step forward, two steps back.
