FIU vs Liberty Odds: Flames Best Pick to Cover Spread 10/8

  • Liberty has won the previous two matchups with FIU.
  • The Flames are a double-digit favorite for the ninth time in the last 10 home games.
  • Read on for our top 3 FIU vs Liberty betting predictions.

Believe it or not, Liberty’s 17-game winning streak during the regular season is the longest active streak among Football Bowl Subdivision teams. Texas is the only other program to have won at least 10 consecutive regular-season contests heading into Week 7. The Flames look to keep it going with a home matchup on Tuesday versus Florida International. The college football odds have the Flames as a double-digit favorite for the ninth time in the last 10 home games.

This is just the third meeting between FIU and Liberty. The Flames won 36-34 in 2020 as a 9.5-point favorite at home. In last year’s game, Liberty rolled to the 38-6 victory as a double-digit favorite on the road. That matchup fell under the 54.5-point total.

NCAA football betting lines have Liberty favored by 17 points as the Flames look to reverse a troubling betting trend after failing to cover as a double-digit favorite in its first two home games of the 2024 season.

When looking at the college football futures odds, Liberty came into the season as the favorite at -225 to win the Conference USA title while FIU had the longest Conference USA championship odds at +10000. Liberty’s odds of winning the national championship have moved from +50000 to +10000 since the start of the season.

FIU vs Liberty: 3 Betting Predictions

1. Flames having ATS Struggles as Home Favorite

Liberty’s strength of schedule heading into this matchup is the worst among the 134 FBS programs according to the College Football Reference database, so this is a matchup that could reveal how good the Flames are.

Liberty has won its last 11 games as a home favorite. However, the Flames are just 6-5 against the sports betting odds in those contests. Among FBS teams favored at home at least 10 times since the start of the 2023 season, only Iowa, Michigan, North Carolina, Oregon, Texas A&M, Troy and Washington have lower winning percentages against the spread as the home favorite.

FIU has covered in five of its last eight games as the road underdog. The outright results have not been as impressive with the Golden Panthers dropping 23 of the last 27 games as a road ‘dog. FIU held Louisiana Tech to 297 yards in last week’s Conference USA opener.

It was the first time since 2020 that the Golden Panthers limited an FBS opponent under 300 yards. It is going to be hard to duplicate that performance against a Liberty team that has led Conference USA in total offense in each of the last two seasons.

FIU does appear to be an improved team. However, it is hard to pick against Liberty at home.

Bet on Liberty To Cover (-17)

2. Will Another FIU-Liberty Game Land Under the Total?

Liberty is tied with Jacksonville State among Conference USA teams with 10 games landing over the total since the start of the 2023 season. FIU isn’t far behind with nine of the last 17 games landing over the total. The total for this matchup is at 54.5.

Liberty averaged 39.3 points in conference play last season but that number has dropped to 29 through the first two games. The biggest difference on this year’s FIU defense could be junior linebacker Travion Barnes. The Georgia Military transfer is the leading tackler in Conference USA and figures to be busy in this game.

If this FIU defense allowed a Football Championship Subdivision Monmouth team to gain 540 yards and 45 points earlier this season, what will happen against Conference USA powerhouse Liberty? Expect points when making your NCAAF picks.

Bet on FIU vs Liberty Over 54.5

3. Salter Poised to Air It Out For Liberty

This could be an opportunity for the national TV audience to check out Liberty quarterback Kaidon Salter. The Flames have won 17 of the last 18 games started by Salter, with the lone loss coming to a top-10 Oregon team in the Fiesta Bowl.

Salter leads Conference USA and ranks 21st nationally with a passer rating of 161.97. He was third only behind current NFL starting quarterbacks Jayden Daniels and Bo Nix in passing efficiency during the 2023 season. He has 20 TD passes and three interceptions in his last 10 Conference USA games and he will be a popular target in the NCAAF player prop options and could be used in NCAA football parlays as well.
