Hawaii vs Michigan Predictions, Game Preview, Live Stream, Odds & Picks
The first thing that stands out about this game is that the college betting lines placed a 51-point spread on the game. Michigan has won just two of its last 64 games by at least 50 points. Hawaii is 127th out of 131 Football Bowl Subdivision teams in scoring defense, allowing an average of 56 points in the first two games of 2022.
Hawaii has already allowed six plays from scrimmage of 30 yards or more. Only North Texas and Charlotte have given up more. The defensive struggles are nothing new, Rainbows were last in total defense and 11th out of 12 Mountain West teams in scoring defense in 2021.

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh has done things his way at each of his coaching staff so perhaps it shouldn’t be too surprising that he is coming up with a unique quarterback rotation. J.J. McCarthy will start against Hawaii after last year’s starter Cade McNamara started the opener. McCarthy will offer more of a running threat than McNamara.
According to the college football lines, Michigan (+475) is second only behind Ohio State in the odds to win the Big Ten title. Hawaii (+25000) comes in 12th out of the 12 teams in the Mountain West Conference title odds.
Michigan (+5000) is tied for eighth in the odds to win the national championship.
Let’s check the latest NCAAF picks, stats, injury reports, and NCAAF odds for Hawaii vs Michigan. We’ve plenty of NCAAF predictions.
Hawaii Rainbow Warriors
The Timmy Chang era as the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors head coach has gotten off to a tough start. The Rainbows were outscored 112-27 in losses to Vanderbilt and Western Kentucky.
Chang was a record-setting quarterback at Hawaii during his playing days but the passing offense needs plenty of work as the Rainbows have no touchdown passes and five interceptions as well as just 5.2 yards per attempt in the first two games.
Dedrick Parson (111 yards, two touchdowns) and Nasjzaé Bryant-Lelei (85 yards, one touchdown) are the top runners.
Jonah Panoke, Jalen Walthall and James Phillips have combined for 27 receptions.
The fact that defensive backs Virdel Edwards and Leonard Lee lead the Rainbows in solo tackles speaks volumes about the struggles on that side of the ball.
Michigan Wolverines
The good news is that Michigan Wolverines has proven it can win against a Mountain West team and will have a chance to do it again on Saturday. However, for a team with national championship aspirations, the early portion of the schedule isn’t going to prepare the Wolverines for Big Ten play.
It hasn’t hurt when it comes to the national polls.
Michigan jumped up four spots to No. 4 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll. The Wolverines moved from sixth to fifth in the American Football Coaches Association poll.

A total of 15 different Michigan players had at least one catch in a season-opening win over Colorado State as three different quarterbacks got into the game.
Blake Corum, who according to the college football predictions is currently at +10000 in the Heisman Trophy odds, split time with Donovan Edwards as they combined for 140 yards on 25 carries and a pair of touchdown runs.
Junior Colson led the defense with 10 tackles. Rod Moore had an interception and was one of nine Michigan players who had a part in the seven sacks in the opener. The seven sacks matched the highest total for Michigan a season ago when NFL draft picks Aidan Hutchinson and David Ojabo were in the backfield early and often throughout the memorable 2021 season.
Hawaii vs Michigan Injury Report
Hawaii receiver Zion Bowens missed Hawaii’s last game and is questionable.

Hawaii vs Michigan Head-to-Head
This will be the first meeting between the Rainbows and Wolverines since a 63-3 Michigan win on Sept. 3, 2016 with the Wolverines favored by 36½ points. That was also the Rainbows’ most recent game against a Big Ten program.
Michigan also topped Hawaii 48-17 as a 38-point favorite on Nov. 28, 1998.
Hawaii lost its last four contests against teams from the Big Ten with the average margin of victory being 41.8 points. The last win against a team from the Big Ten was a 42-35 victory over Purdue on Nov. 25, 2006.
Michigan has won the last six games against Mountain West teams but have covered in just three of those contests.
Michigan opened the season against Hawaii’s conference rival Colorado State and won 51-7 as a 31-point favorite according to the college football picks.

Hawaii vs Michigan Prediction
Michigan has covered in just two of the last six games when the Wolverines were favored by at least 30 points. Being asked to cover as a 51-point favorite could be a bit on the challenging side even against a defensively challenged Hawaii team.
Something to consider for those who bet online, Hawaii is 2-6-1 against the college football lines in its last nine games and 2-7 against the spread in the last nine games on the road. The last time Hawaii was an underdog by at least 20 points it didn’t go well as Boise State rolled to a 52-16 win as a 21½-point favorite. It isn’t often that it will take seven touchdowns, seven successful extra points, and a field goal for a team to cover but that is what Michigan faces this weekend.
As much of a talent discrepancy as there might be, calling on Michigan to win by more than 50 points to cover might be asking for a bit much. There’s little doubt that Michigan should win and win big but by at least 52 points?
