Houston has dominated the head-to-head series between these conference rivals, 18-7, though Tulane has been competitive in recent years, winning three of the last seven meetings. The Cougars came out on top 49-31 last year in Houston.
The Green Wave have defended their home field in the last two games played in New Orleans, including a 38-31 win in 2019. Next game: vs. East Carolina
Houston jumped out to a 28-0 lead midway through the second quarter and cruised to a 45-10 victory over Tulsa. Freshman running back Alton McCaskill led the way with three rushing touchdowns.
McCaskill had 77 yards on 17 carries as the Cougars racked up 144 rushing yards while holding the Golden Hurricane to just 31 yards on the ground. Overall, Houston outgained Tulsa 405-289 and forced three turnovers.
Quarterback Clayton Tune finished 17 of 24 for 241 yards and two touchdowns. Nathaniel Dell had six grabs for 82 yards to lead the Cougars.
The Cougars won despite being 2½-point underdogs, improving to 2-0 against the spread on the road. Overall, Houston is 3-2 ATS in 2021.
Tune looked good against Tulsa in his second straight complete game after dealing with a hamstring injury suffered in the third game . He shouldn’t be limited in this contest.
Tulane Green Wave
Next game: at SMU
Tulane tried to rally from a 31-7 halftime deficit against East Carolina but came up short in the 52-29 loss. Quarterback Michael Platt extended his consecutive passing touchdown streak to 14 games with one scoring toss while also finding the end zone twice on the ground.
Platt finished with 268 yards passing, though he did have three interceptions. Running back Cameron Carroll had a solid game, rushing for a team-high 80 yards and a score while adding two receptions for 67 yards. Duece Watts had four catches for 79 yards while Ygenio Booker had a team-high five receptions for 32 yards and a score.
The Tulane defense had its troubles, allowing 612 total yards to the Pirates, including 310 on the ground. The Pirates averaged 7.8 yards per play and didn’t commit a single turnover.
The Green Wave were a three-point favorite but dropped their third straight against the spread to fall to 3-2 ATS.
Betting on the Game
The Cougars win big when they beat the Green Wave in recent years, and this season should be no exception. Tulane is last in the AAC in scoring defense, allowing 40.2 points per game, while Houston ranks first at 13.8 points allowed per game.
Although Tulane has the higher scoring average, putting up 35.0 points per game, much of that is based on the 69 points from its only win over Morgan State. The Cougars have been the more consistent offensive team, especially with Tune back and healthy.
In all four of its losses, Tulane has fallen behind big early in the game. That should continue in this one as the Cougars pull away to make it a laugher.
With the point spread being what it is, betting the moneyline offers some possibility if you believe Tulane is going to pull the upset straight up. When putting together your college football picks, Green Wave bettors have to factor whether to take some points for a little less payoff with a win.
The Houston moneyline isn’t a bad bet either if you are fearful of Tulane making this a close game. But if you’re confident in the Cougars winning big, a point spread bet is certainly worth it
Tulane gives up a lot of points this season, so if Houston gets rolling, it could almost cover the over/under by itself. Whether or not the Green Wave’s offense can get moving is the question mark. Even in its losses, Tulane has been able to score late to make the final a little more respectable, so taking the over seems like the better wager when doing your betting on college football.
Final Score: Houston Cougars 42, Tulane Green Wave 20
