Indiana Struggling to Hold Opponents in Check

The Indiana Hoosiers have been running a gauntlet of ranked opponents recently, but throughout their seven-game losing streak, they’ve had trouble shutting down opposing offenses. Indiana is coming off a 56-14 loss to Ohio State, which came a week after the Hoosiers allowed 45 points in a loss to Penn State.

The offense has a lot of pressure to come through and keep up on the scoreboard, and it’s been having its struggles as well. Indiana is averaging 22.4 points and 323.0 yards, but much of that has come at the end of blowouts when teams are allowing the Hoosiers to move the ball through the air (237.2 yards per game).

Junior Connor Bazelak returned to the field after sitting out a game with an injury, but he didn’t play much against Ohio State, completing 3 of 5 for 12 yards. Bazelak has passed for 2,111 yards and 12 touchdowns but has also thrown nine interceptions.

Sophomore Dexter Williams II got the start against Penn State when Bazelak was out and then relieved him against the Buckeyes. Williams finished with 107 yards and two touchdowns against Ohio State, but he also took four sacks in the loss.

Michigan State Feeling Good After Run

The 2022 season was going to be one to forget for the Michigan State Spartans after they dropped four straight games and sat at 2-4 halfway through the schedule. But after winning three of four, the Spartans are on the cusp of a bowl bid and feel like they could win out to make this a solid season to remember.

It’s a lot more fun when you win,” Spartans quarterback Payton Thorne said after last Saturday’s win over Rutgers. “Football isn’t all that fun when you’re losing. Getting three of the last four is really good, and the one that we dropped (at Michigan), it could have been very different, a couple of plays here and there. I think we’re playing a lot better than we were earlier in the year as a team. We just got to keep rolling.

Thorne has been playing better, throwing for 256 yards and two touchdowns against the Scarlet Knights. Thorne has 2,152 yards and 16 touchdowns, though he’s also tossed nine interceptions.

The Michigan State running game has also been getting into gear, led by sophomore Jalen Berger. For the second straight week, Berger went over 80 yards rushing, going for 85 and a touchdown against Rutgers. He leads the Spartans with 550 yards and six scores.
