If not for a last-second missed field goal in Minnesota’s season opener and Iowa squandering a 13-point halftime lead to rival Iowa State, the Big Ten opener for both teams could have been a showdown between undefeated squads. The sports betting odds have Iowa as the road favorite against Minnesota for the eighth time in the last 10 meetings.

Iowa vs Minnesota 9/21 Odds: Bet Hawkeyes ATS

Minnesota snapped an eight-game losing streak to Iowa with a 12-10 win as Iowa had the game’s only offensive touchdown. There was some controversy as Cooper DeJean’s punt return for a touchdown was called back when it was ruled that he signaled for a fair catch.

Eleven of the last 15 games between Minnesota and Iowa went under the total with 22 and 23 points in the last two meetings.

The college football betting line has Iowa listed as a 2½-point favorite with -140 odds to improve to 11-2 in the last 13 matchups with Minnesota. Minnesota is priced at +120 to win its Big Ten opener for the third season in a row.

In the college football futures odds, Iowa is seventh at +4500 in the odds of winning the Big Ten title while Minnesota is well back at +25000 in the Big Ten championship odds.

Iowa vs Minnesota 9/21 Betting Predictions

1. An Iowa Game to Go Under? Surprise, Surprise, Surprise

Death, taxes and an Iowa conference game with a total under 40 are about the only sure things these days. This will be the 16th consecutive Big Ten game featuring Iowa with a total in the 20s or the 30s. The 35.5-point total set by the BetUS sportsbook is the lowest among this week’s Football Bowl Subdivision matchups.

Both teams have played one game against a Power-4 conference team and neither looked very impressive when they had the ball.

Minnesota managed just 244 yards in a loss to North Carolina and one of the two touchdowns came on a 6-yard drive following an interception. Iowa managed just 22 yards with two turnovers on its last six drives in a loss to Iowa State.

Iowa’s last eight Big Ten games landed under the sports betting odds total. Now the Hawkeyes are facing a Minnesota defense that has posted back-to-back shutouts and ranks in the top five nationally in scoring defense and total defense.

2. Will Iowa Or Minnesota Get Passing Grades?

Both the Hawkeyes and the Gophers dipped into the transfer portal to try to solve the substandard play at the quarterback position.

Minnesota brought in Max Brosmer from New Hampshire, where he was a Football Championship Subdivision All-American.

He is completing 68.8% of his passes through the first three games with 627 yards and three touchdowns. Brosmer was held under 200 passing yards in both of Minnesota’s games against FBS competition.

This is Cade McNamara’s second season at Iowa after losing his starting job at Michigan to eventual national championship-winning QB J.J. McCarthy.

He didn’t show much in an injury-shortened 2023 season when he completed 51.1% of his passes with four TDs and three interceptions in five games.

It was more of the same against Iowa State as McNamara was 13 of 29 for 99 yards and two interceptions.

Running backs Kaleb Johnson of Iowa (479 yards, six touchdowns) and Minnesota’s Darius Taylor (124 yards, two TDs in last week’s win) could be better college football player prop options. Kamari Moulton, Iowa’s second-leading rusher, is expected to play.

3. Look for Iowa to Win in Minnesota Again

Iowa has won its last seven games as the road underdog. That streak began with a 2020 win at Minnesota. The Hawkeyes have covered in all but one of those matchups.

Minnesota has lost seven of its last 10 games as the home underdog with a 3-5-2 mark against the sports betting odds.

The Hawkeyes have covered in five of their last six games at Minnesota and are 15-3 outright over the last 18 games in September. That is enough to roll with the Hawkeyes to top the Gophers again.
