James Madison to Stay Perfect on Moneyline vs Georgia State

After analyzing the College football spreads on Saturday, we found an intriguing matchup between undefeated James Madison and Georgia State. Let’s examine this Sun Belt Conference clash and keep cashing our college football picks.

JMU Defense Thrives

James Madison has made a splash since stepping up from the FCS to the FBS ranks last season. After tying for the top spot in the Sun Belt East Division in 2022, the Dukes are doing themselves one better with an undefeated record 10 games into the season and ranked 23rd in the nation.

If defense wins championships, then James Madison has a legitimate shot to win the Sun Belt Conference. However, the Dukes are ineligible to participate in both the Sun Belt title game and any bowls due to a mandatory two-year waiting period after transitioning from FCS to FBS.

Ranked 30th in the nation on defense, the Dukes allow 20.3 points per game and are No. 1 against the run, permitting a mere 36.14 yards per game.

As for Jimmy Mad’s offensive attack, senior Jordan McCloud has been under center and acquitting himself quite nicely with 18 passing and four rushing touchdowns, six picks and a 65.5 completion percentage for 2,036 passing yards. The Dukes are tied for 41st in the nation in scoring, averaging 32.1 points per game.

Georgia State Reeling

Georgia State entered last week’s matchup against Georgia Southern with only one blemish on their otherwise pristine record. However, the Eagles offense proved too much for the Panthers as Southern went on to a 44-27 victory and Georgia State dropped to 8-2 on the season.

Senior Darren Granger has been pulling the trigger for the Panthers this year and has 12 passing and 5 rushing touchdowns, 4 interceptions, and a 67.4 completion percentage for 1,789 passing yards.

But the ground game is where the Panthers make their mark, currently ranked 24th in the nation averaging 191.1 rushing yards. Senior tailback, Marcus Carroll has been doing most of the heavy lifting with 12 rushing touchdowns and 1,060 yards on a 5.4 yards per carry average.

James Madison vs. Georgia State Best Bet

After perusing the most recent Las Vegas college football odds, we see the Dukes are 5½-point road favorites across the board at the major online sports betting sites. At first blush, that seems a bit steep, allowing a case to be made for the home underdogs from Georgia State.

However, when we evaluate how the Panthers fared against similarly upper-echelon competition like their opponents on Saturday, we see that they lost by an average of 19 points to Troy (28-7) and last week to Georgia Southern (44-27).

I mention both teams are similar to James Madison in that Georgia Southern and Troy are in the top 15 in sacks and tackles for a loss this season. The Dukes are No. 1 in those categories with JMU’s Jalen Green the nation’s sack leader with 15.5 on the year.

I think we have picked out a discernable pattern here and this looks like a runaway for the Dukes, much as Troy did when it visited Georgia State on Sept. 23 and won by three touchdowns. The college football odds are low enough on the visitors so lay it and like it with James Madison.

College Football Pick: James Madison -5 ½
