The Southeastern Conference race is tight at the top, and the No. 3 Texas Longhorns are looking to take a step closer to the conference championship game in their first season in the league. Texas will host the Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday, with a showdown vs Texas A&M looming next week.

The Longhorns and Aggies are tied atop the SEC standings with identical 5-1 marks in conference play and four teams just below them with two league losses apiece. Kentucky is not one of those teams – it is 1-6 against SEC competition this season, though that win was over then-unbeaten Ole Miss.

Texas is a 20½-point favorite in this contest. The over/under for the game is set at 47 points. Check out our closer look at the game and our recommendations on how your college football picks should be made.

2 Ways To Bet On Kentucky vs Texas

1. Longhorns’ Defense Should Shut Down Wildcats

Texas hasn’t exactly been blowing teams out regularly, with a three-point victory over Vanderbilt and a 10-point win over Arkansas being part of the team’s last three contests. There was a 32-point rout of Florida at home in there, though, so the potential for an offensive explosion is there.

Junior Quinn Ewers is at the controls of the Texas offense, throwing for 10 touchdowns over the team’s current three-game winning streak. Ewers is coming off just 176 yards against Arkansas last week, finishing 20-of-32 and throwing two touchdown passes. For someone who had been among the betting favorites for the Heisman Trophy earlier in the season, it wasn’t an eye-opening performance, but the Longhorns are looking for a bigger prize.

When you just don’t have as many opportunities, you’ve got to try to maximize them when you get them,” Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian said after the win over the Razorbacks. “Him taking care of the football, converting on third downs and what a play on fourth down to kind of seal the game. I was proud of him for that.

Wide receiver Matthew Golden scored a pair of touchdowns for the second straight game. Four of his last five catches have been for scores.

However, per Kentucky vs Texas stats, the Longhorns haven’t had to put up a lot of points because the defense has been doing its job. Arkansas managed just 231 yards of offense and just 10 points against Texas. The Longhorns rank fourth in the country in scoring defense, allowing only 11.9 points per game, and Kentucky isn’t going to find the going easy on Saturday.

Despite all of that, we have a hard time taking a three-touchdown margin for the Longhorns. Texas wins this game, but if you’re making your bet online against the spread (ATS), take the points and Kentucky.

2. Points Won’t Be Easy To Come By In This One

As we’ve already noted, Texas is one of the stingiest defenses in the country. But some of the Wildcats’ best defensive efforts this season have come against highly-ranked teams.

Kentucky made college football news when it lost to Georgia by just one point (13-12) early in the season, then made more headlines with a win over Ole Miss, holding the prolific Rebels offense to just 17 points.

The Wildcats had lost four straight before last week’s non-conference 48-6 win over Murray State. That may have helped get the team’s confidence back up as it heads down the stretch of the campaign. It takes two wins – this week vs Texas and next week vs Louisville – for Kentucky to become bowl-eligible, so expect a very strong effort from the team in this one.

For Kentucky to keep this game close, it will need another big game from running back Jamarion Wilcox. The freshman has back-to-back 100-yard efforts on the ground as he’s been getting more of the workload, including 102 against Tennessee two games ago.

It will likely be in a losing effort, but we like Kentucky to keep this close, which means a low-scoring contest. Our college football predictions for this one include the under.
