NFL Departures Didn't Slow Down Defending Champs

LSU Eyeing First SEC Title Since 2017

It might be surprising to learn that Louisiana State has won the SEC Championship Game more recently than Georgia has.

LSU won everything – the SEC, national title, and Heisman Trophy to quarterback Joe Burrow during a magical 2019 season.

While Georgia was winning the national title in 2021, the one blemish came to Alabama in the SEC championship.

It is hard to foresee a scenario where Georgia will be left out of the College Football Playoff field regardless of the outcome this week. LSU’s national title hopes ended with a loss to unranked Texas A&M in the regular-season finale.

Georgia led the SEC in total defense for the second year in a row, even with five defensive players selected in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft and defensive coordinator Dan Lanning taking the head coaching job at Oregon.

Georgia remains first in both the Associated Press and American Football Coaches Association polls with the Bulldogs picking up 118 of 126 first-place votes. LSU fell to 11th in the AP poll and 13th in the AFCA rankings.

According to the college football playoff odds, Georgia is priced at -165 in the odds to win the national title. The Bulldogs are attempting to become the first team to win back-to-back national championships since the College Football Playoff system started in 2014.

Let’s check the latest college football odds, stats, injury reports, and college football lines for LSU vs Georgia. We’ve plenty of NCAA football odds for you to consider.

Tigers Ready to Roar

LSU isn’t ranked in the top three in the Southeastern Conference in any of the major offensive or defensive categories. But in a season when 11 of the 14 SEC teams spent at least one week in the AP Top 25 poll, LSU is one of the last two teams standing.

The season began with a certain curiosity after the stunning decision by longtime Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly to take the LSU job.

Kelly didn’t come away empty-handed with a strong group of transfers joining him. That includes former Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels. He has thrown for 15 touchdowns and run for 11 others as LSU won the West Division title on a tiebreaker thanks to a 32-31 overtime win against Alabama, when LSU went for a two-point conversion in the first overtime rather than extending the game with an extra point. The try was good to give LSU its signature win.

Freshman Harold Perkins made a huge impact by leading LSU with 11 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks.

The college football betting lines total has gone over in four of the last five games against conference opponents.

Bennett Back for More

It isn’t often that the national championship-winning quarterback returns for an encore.

However, Stetson Bennett is not only back, he is playing a larger role this season.

Bennett is attempting 10 more passes per game than he did a season ago because the defense isn’t quite as dominating as it was. He is already over 3,000 passing yards. He has thrown for 16 scores and ran for seven more.

He provided a peek of what was coming when he had five TD passes and no interceptions in the two playoff games last season.

Sophomores Brock Bowers and Ladd McConkey are his favorite receivers while running back Kenny McIntosh contributes as a runner and a receiver.

Sophomores Jamon Dumas-Johnson and Smael Mondon as freshman Malaki Starks lead a rebuilt defense.

The Las Vegas odds total has gone under in 10 of Georgia’s last 14 games.

LSU is 4-0-1 against the college football odds in the last five games against Georgia

As painful and disappointing as LSU’s loss to Texas A&M was, it should allow the Tigers to play pressure-free since there won’t be a spot in the College Football Playoffs hanging in the balance.

The line opened at 14 for the SEC title game but has since moved to 17½. The line could move some more once more is known regarding Daniels’ status.

While Georgia is one of three undefeated teams left in the county, the Bulldogs are just 6-6 against the spread.

Keep an eye on the injury updates. Not only is Daniels dealing with an ankle injury, but cornerback Jarrick Bernard-Converse (concussion) is also questionable for LSU while running back Josh Williams is probable after missing the last two games with a knee injury.

Georgia tight end Arik Gilbert is questionable while offensive lineman Earnest Greene (leg) is nearing a return. Georgia has played the last four games without linebacker Nolan Smith.
