The first No. 1 team in the 2024 College Football Playoff rankings takes the field on Saturday when the top-ranked Oregon Ducks host the Maryland Terrapins for a Big Ten clash. Oregon has started the season with nine straight wins, including six against conference foes.

Maryland has struggled in 2024, going 4-4 overall but winning just one of its first five conference contests. The Terrapins are coming off a bye after losing on the road to Minnesota on Oct. 26.

The college football lines have the Ducks favored by 25 points against the Terrapins. The over/under for the contest has been set at 57½ points.

We’re going to take a closer look at this contest and help you determine what college football bets you want to make for Saturday’s game.

2 Betting Keys for Maryland vs Oregon

1. High-Powered Ducks Tough to Score Upon

While Oregon is known for its strong offensive attack, the Ducks are atop the national rankings for more than just that. The team’s defense has been solid, especially over the last few weeks.

In their last three wins, the Ducks have allowed a total of 26 points. Oregon is fourth in the Big Ten in scoring defense, allowing just 15.8 points per contest.

Not that stopping the nation’s No. 1 team is any easier than scoring on them. Per Maryland vs Oregon stats, the Ducks are putting up 35.3 points per game, which could rise after facing a Terrapins squad that allows 27.8 points per game.

Quarterback Dillon Gabriel has been masterful at running the Oregon offense. He has passed for 2,665 yards and 19 touchdowns while also running for 120 yards and six scores. He’s had a rushing touchdown in four of the last five games while passing for at least one touchdown in every game this season.

Gabriel’s play has put him among the betting favorites for this year’s Heisman Trophy.

Junior running back Jordan James got back to the century mark last week against Michigan, rushing for 117 yards and a touchdown. He’s close to 1,000 yards for the season, coming into Saturday’s matchup with 917 yards and nine touchdowns.

Maryland is going to have to score touchdowns to stay with the Ducks in this one, but that won’t be easy against a strong Oregon defense. The balance of the Ducks is why they are among the college football picks for the national title this season.

2.Terrapins Unable To Stop Opponents From Scoring

Even if the Maryland offense is able to find the end zone a few times, the Terrapins’ defense is not equipped to stop Oregon. Minnesota scored 48 on the Terrapins two weeks ago, and even Northwestern, which averages 21.9 points, scored 37 in a win over Maryland on Oct. 11.

The Terrapins are last in the Big Ten in passing yards allowed per game at 275.8. That’s a scary stat for those betting online with Gabriel and his batch of receivers on the other side of the ball on Saturday.

Maryland is able to hold opponents to just 105.2 rushing yards per game, but it’s likely because opponents are more than happy to go to the air against the Terrapins.

Since the team’s defense likely won’t be stopping the Ducks, Maryland’s offense must be better for the Terrapins to be competitive. Quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. has thrown for 2,314 yards and 13 touchdowns, but he struggled against Minnesota two weeks ago.

Against the Golden Gophers, Edwards threw for just 201 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions. And he’ll be facing the ferocious Oregon pass rush in this one. The junior must make good decisions quickly and avoid turnovers that the Ducks can turn into points.

We don’t see it happening, though. Your NCAA football predictions should include the Ducks to romp to an easy win in this one, covering the 25-point spread.
