What did Michigan State do to anger the Big Ten schedule makers? After managing just one touchdown in a 31-point loss to No. 3 Ohio State, the Spartans hit the road to face a top-10 Oregon team.

It is part of a five-game stretch against four ranked teams for the Spartans. Oregon is listed by the college football picks as a double-digit favorite at home for the 10th time since the start of the 2023 season.

The Spartans and Ducks haven’t met in the regular season since 2015, with Michigan State winning by three points but failing to cover as a five-point favorite. The home team has won each of the last four regular-season meetings. Both games played at Oregon finished over the total.

The most recent meeting came in the 2018 Redbox Bowl, with current Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert’s fourth-quarter touchdown pass the difference in a 7-6 win for the Ducks.

The NCAA football betting line has Oregon favored by 24 points. There was a similar line a week ago against UCLA, and while the Ducks won the game easily (34-13), they did not cover.

In the college football futures odds, Oregon is second at +240 in the odds of winning the Big Ten title. Michigan State is well back at +35000 in the Big Ten championship odds.

Michigan State vs Oregon: 3 Betting Predictions

1. Ducks Favored to Improve to 2-0 in Big Ten Play

Oregon’s first Big Ten game didn’t feel like anything different since the Ducks were facing longtime Pac-12 rival UCLA. It could be a different deal on Friday when Michigan State makes the trip to Eugene.

Oregon scored on each of its first five possessions in bolting to a 28-3 lead. Dillon Gabriel is completing more than 80% of his passes through the first four games. He is somebody to keep an eye on in the player prop and the college football parlay bets.

2. Offensive Miscues Costing Spartans

Two of Michigan State’s most promising drives ended with turnovers in last week’s 38-7 loss to Ohio State. If not for an interception that only left the Spartans 12 yards to drive for their lone touchdown, Michigan State likely would have been shut out for the third time in the last eight Big Ten games.

Despite the lopsided loss to Ohio State, the Spartans have shown signs of growth on offense. When making college football picks, keep in mind that they have gone from averaging 289 yards per game to 370 through the first five games.

Spartans quarterback Aidan Chiles, an Oregon State transfer, was recruited by Oregon out of high school but he did not play against the Ducks in his lone season quarterbacking the Beavers.

His eight interceptions are concerning. Chiles already has three games with at least two interceptions this season. However, nearly one out of every five completions has gone for at least 20 yards.

3. Go With Ducks to Roll vs Spartans

This is the first chance to compare Big Ten heavyweights Ohio State and Oregon since both will have played Michigan State. That might not be the best news for the visiting Spartans as Oregon will have an incentive to put away Michigan State early.

Oregon had a stretch when it covered against the BetUS sportsbook odds seven times in a span of nine games as a double-digit favorite at home. Since the start of the 2023 season, the Ducks are 5-4 against the spread when favored by at least 10 points at home.

Since the start of the 2019 season, Oregon is 25-1 outright as a home favorite of 10 points or more. Michigan State has won just two of its last 10 games as a double-digit road underdog. The Spartans are 2-5-3 against the spread in those games.

There is about a 10% chance of rain for the game but the weather shouldn’t have much of an impact on the game.

The total has gone under in four of Michigan State’s last five games and in four of the last five matchups with Big Ten teams. Five of Oregon’s last seven games went under the total. Michigan State has been held under 20 points in seven of its last 10 Big Ten games. When making college football predictions, keep that in mind when it comes to the 52.5-point total.

Both Oregon and Michigan State are 2-4 against the college football spread in its last six games.

Receiver Antonio Gates Jr. and tight end Michael Masunas are both questionable for Michigan State. Defensive back Dillon Tatum is also questionable, according to the college football injury report.

Oregon failed to cover last week as a heavy favorite against UCLA. However, that game was on the road. With Oregon playing at home, go with the Ducks to win and cover versus Michigan State.
