Now up to No. 12 in the national rankings, battle-tested Michigan will look to take care of business on Saturday against Big Ten rival Minnesota. The Wolverines have dominated this longtime conference rivalry but haven’t looked particularly overpowering after winning it all under former head coach Jim Harbaugh last season.
Let’s find out right now if Michigan can get the win and cover the Week 5 college football betting odds or whether the Gophers are the better pick as a near double-digit underdog.

Golden Gophers Seeking Consistency
Unranked Minnesota (2-2) is coming off a humbling 31-14 home loss against Iowa on Saturday that snapped the Gophers’ two-game winning streak. Minnesota was outscored 24-0 in the second half after going into the break up 14-7. The Gophers gave up 206 rushing yards and three rushing scores to NCAA rushing leader Kaleb Johnson.
Minnesota got two touchdown passes from senior quarterback Max Brosmer, but the sixth-year transfer from New Hampshire also tossed two costly picks in the loss that the Gophers couldn’t overcome as 2½-point underdogs in online betting.

“When we gave Max time, he looked really good back there,” Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck said. “Just got to continue to keep him in a rhythm.”
Wolverines Figuring New Identity
I like how Michigan (3-1) is finding its identity under new head coach Sherrone Moore. The 12th-ranked Wolverines have won two straight and come into this Week 5 affair riding high after upsetting previously 11th-ranked USC on Saturday.
Bruising senior running back Kalel Mullings rushed for a career-high 159 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner on fourth-and-goal from two yards out with 57 seconds left as Michigan defied NCAA football predictions as 5½-point underdogs.
“It’s not five guys, it’s seven with the tight ends out there,” Mullings said of his jumbo package touchdown run.

Bet Wolverines To Hold Down The Fort
Michigan has made it a habit to take care of business when suiting up at home in Ann Arbor and that’s exactly what I expect the Wolverines to do in this Week 5 Big Ten battle.
The Wolverines are 31st nationally in rushing yards per game (204.8) and have a workhorse back in Mullings who is averaging 8.1 yards per carry. Mullings has rushed for 429 yards and four scores on just 53 carries while fellow senior back Donovan Edwards has added 224 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns on 50 carries.
I also like that Michigan is more battle-tested coming into this game, having played two nationally ranked teams, including current No. 1 Texas. Minnesota beat two lesser programs by getting past Rhode Island and Nevada, but it doesn’t bode well that the Gophers have been on the wrong end of defeats against North Carolina and Iowa.
Minnesota is 1-4 ATS in its last five road games and 0-5 ATS in its last five games against its Big Ten rivals. Michigan is 10-5 against the college football spread in its last 15 games and 9-2 ATS in its last 11 meetings against Minnesota.
While I’m a bit wary of Michigan’s lack of explosive big-play ability through four games, Minnesota’s 17-point home loss to Iowa leads me to believe the Gophers are in for a long afternoon in this Week 5 showdown.
I’m going with the Wolverines to get the win and narrowly cover the college football odds against a Minnesota Gophers squad that hasn’t shown up against its two quality opponents this season.
