It’s the Conference Opener in East Lansing
Minnesota looks to remain undefeated as conference play begins when the Gophers travel to East Lansing to meet the Michigan State Spartans.
Both teams started the season with a pair of victories. There were differing results this past week.

Minnesota is off to a 3-0 start after the Gophers crushed Colorado, 49-7, at home
Michigan State, meanwhile, won its first couple out of the gate, but fell, 39-28, at Washington a week ago.
Both teams have similar NCAA football odds to win the Big Ten, with Minnesota given the fifth-best chance (+2000) odds. Michigan State is next priced at +2200.
Let’s check the latest, stats, injury reports, and college football lines for Minnesota vs Michigan State.
Gophers Are Golden
While Minnesota Golden Gophers’ strong offense has been compiling big numbers, defense has been stellar as well.
Offense has been rolling, ranking second in the nation with 554.7 yards per game. Running back Mohamid Ibrahim is a big part of that. He’s second in the nation in rushing with 464 yards thus far.
While the offense has been gelling, defense has been a key part of Minnesota’s success as well.
Minnesota’s tied at No. 4 in the nation in points allowed, and second in yards allowed, having surrendered 5.7 points and 170.3 yards a game.
Minnesota had another suffocating defensive performance against Colorado, as through three quarters, it had held the Buffs scoreless and just 91 total yards. The Buffs’ lone touchdown against Minnesota came in the final quarter, after the Gophers had pulled their starters.
Spartan Struggles
As Minnesota thrived in Week 3, Michigan State Spartans stumbled, MSU lost at Washington.
The Spartans’ pass defense struggled to stop Washington. Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. went 24-of-40 (397 yards, four touchdowns).
While Michigan State had previously led the country in sacks (12) through two games, the pass rush was unable to get to Penix against the Huskies.
MSU failed to get much going offensively on the ground, 42 rushing yards (one touchdown).
Quarterback Payton Thorne was the bright spot in Michigan State’s offense, going 30-of-42 (323 yards, three touchdowns, one interception). He’s now 60-of-94 (768 yards, seven touchdowns, four interceptions) through three games this season.
Minnesota vs Michigan State Injuries
Minnesoita’s running back Zach Evans, along with tight ends Nathan Jones and Sam Pickering, are questionable. Wide receiver Chris Autman-Bell is out for the season with a leg injury suffered against Colorado.
Michigan State’s wide receivers Terry Lockett Jr. and Jayden Reed, tight end Evan Morris and safety Xavier Henderson are all questionable. Linebacker Darius Snow suffered a season-ending leg injury in the opener.
Minnesota vs. Michigan State Head-to-Head
The two are in the same conference, so the Gophers and Spartans have played each other a number of times over the years. However, they’re in separate divisions, so not an every=year rivalry.
Minnesota and Michigan State have met 47 times since 1950, the Spartans leading, 30-17. They last met in October, 2017, when the Spartans downed the Gophers, 30-27, in Minnesota. Minnesota’s last win came in October 2009, 42-34 victory at home.

Minnesota vs Michigan State Prediction
Although the game is at Spartan Stadium, Minnesota is the slight favorite due to Michigan State’s uninspiring performance against Washington last week.
Minnesota’s been performing at a high level thus far, and while they should continue that trend, this will bring out a tougher opponent in the conference opener. The Spartans, meanwhile, already had a taste of good competition last week.
Expect the game to be close, but the Golden Gophers to stay undefeated and cover.
