The No. 16 Mississippi State Bulldogs look for a fourth straight win when they visit the No. 22 Kentucky Wildcats for a crucial SEC contest on Saturday. Mississippi State has won three straight, including last week’s rout of Arkansas, and is tied for third place in the SEC West with LSU, one game behind first-place Alabama.
Kentucky has lost two in a row and is tied with South Carolina and Florida for third in the SEC East, two games behind first-place Georgia. For the third straight game, Mississippi State scored 40 or more points on Saturday, routing visiting Arkansas 40-17 for its third consecutive victory. Coach Mike Leach’s squad has the top passing offense in the SEC, led by junior quarterback Will Rogers, who broke the conference’s career completions record in Saturday’s win over the Razorbacks.
“It’s awesome,” Rogers said of breaking the record. “It’s a blessing. I’m blessed to be here with these teammates, with this offensive line, with Coach Leach.“
Rogers has passed for 2,110 yards and 22 touchdowns, ranking first and second, respectively, in the country in those categories. Another plus has been his ability to avoid turnovers, as he’s thrown three interceptions.
Sophomore wide receiver Rara Thomas has been Rogers’ most dangerous target, making 21 catches for 368 yards and three touchdowns. Senior Caleb Ducking leads the Bulldogs with 28 receptions for 322 yards and seven scores.
Kentucky Needs a Win in Worst Way
The Kentucky Wildcats are reeling a bit after consecutive losses, failing to score 20 points in either setback. Kentucky may get senior quarterback Will Levis back on Saturday, however, after he missed last week’s loss to South Carolina with an undisclosed injury.
Levis is fourth in the Southeastern Conference in passing despite missing that game, throwing for 1,405 yards and 12 touchdowns. However, he also ranks second in the conference in sacks taken in 2022, getting taken down 19 times.
To keep the Bulldogs’ offense off the field, Kentucky needs a solid game from its running attack. Kavosiey Smoke leads the way with 283 yards and one touchdown, while senior Chris Rodriguez Jr. has rushed for 198 yards over the last two contests.
Kentucky must also stop the Bulldogs from making big plays in the passing game, which means shoring up in the secondary. The team has been lamenting all of the missed tackles it had against South Carolina in last week’s loss and vows to be better this week.
