Myrtle Beach Bowl Betting Props: Marshall To Top UConn Again

Meet for First Time Since 2015 St. Petersburg Bowl

he last time the UConn football played in a bowl game, the Huskies ran into Marshall in the 2015 St. Petersburg Bowl. With the Huskies, perhaps the most surprising of the 2022 bowl teams based on the struggles in recent years, back bowling in the first season with former NFL head coach Jim Mora Jr. at the helm, once again the Thundering Herd is the opponent.

his game won’t be impacted much by players opting out or heading into the transfer portal. There are some injury concerns, especially at the receiver and running back positions.

he coaching matchup is pretty intriguing with Mora having immediate success at UConn after returning to the college game while second-year Marshall head coach Charles Huff, a former Alabama assistant coach, helped the Thundering Herd make the adjustment from Conference USA to the Sun Belt in just his second season.

Marshall comes in at a 10½-point favorite according to the college football odds with almost no movement since the line was posted.

Among the remaining bowl games, the other matchups with double-digit point spreads are the ones featuring Oregon and North Carolina and Purdue-Louisiana State.

Huskies To Start On Time

Since a nightmarish three-game stretch when the Huskies were outscored 51-0 in the first round in losses to Syracuse, Big Ten champion Michigan and North Carolina State, UConn has scored first five times in the final seven games of the regular season.

While Marshall has actually scored first in more games this season than UConn, don’t be surprised to see the Huskies draw first blood in its first bowl game since 2015.

Pick: UConn to score first (+160)

PATs Over FGs in Myrtle Beach

Marshall has one field goal in its last three games with the Huskies attempting and making one field goal in the last two contests.

With that in mind, it would seem to be a safer bet to go with the first score in this game being a touchdown.

A touchdown opened the scoring in nine games for both Marshall and UConn during the regular season.

Pick: First score to be a touchdown (-250)

Herd Mentality

Marshall pulled off one of the major surprises of the college football season with a 26-21 win at Notre Dame in September before dropping the next two games and four of the next six. The Thundering Herd are back trending in the right direction as Marshall ended the regular season with four wins in a row.

Getting last year’s top rusher Rasheen Ali back for the last two games has made the running game even stronger for Marshall. Ali has rushed for 181 yards in wins against Georgia Southern and Georgia State. Now Marshall has Ali, a 1,400-yard rusher a season ago, and Khalan Laborn, who has rushed for 1,423 yards this season. That is going to be quite the challenge for the UConn defense.

he Huskies are a great story as they are back in a bowl for the first time in seven years. However, they did allow 587 rushing yards and seven touchdown runs over the last two games so this could be a tough matchup for UConn.

Those who bet online have a choice as the price is set at +375 for Marshall to win by either 7-12 or 13-18  points.

Pick: Marshall to win by 7-12 points (+375)

Points at a Premium

It seems likely that there will be more offense than the last time these teams met as just two touchdowns were scored in Marshall’s 16-10 win in the 2015 St. Petersburg Bowl. However, this doesn’t figure to be an offensive showcase.

In games against Football Bowl Subdivision competition, Marshall averaged 20.7 points per game and UConn put up 19.1 points against FBS foes.

Finishing drives has been a challenge at times for both teams. UConn is scoring touchdowns on less than 60% of its drives reaching the red zone. That is still better than Marshall’s mark of 47.8% (44.1% against FBS teams).

he game is not projected to be full of offensive fireworks with a total of 40½ according to the college football betting lines. The Huskies went 4-0 and Marshall 4-3 when the combined point total came in under that.

Pick: Neither team to score at least 25 points (+115).
