The Palmetto Bowl holds a little more weight this season, with the in-state rivalry between the South Carolina Gamecocks and the Clemson Tigers possibly helping one of the teams into the College Football Playoff. Both teams are ranked in the top 20 in the latest AP Top 25 poll, and with a lot of shakeups due to happen over the next week or so, one of them could help their CFP case with a win in this one.

Per South Carolina vs Clemson betting trends, the visiting Gamecocks have won five in a row, including victories over ranked opponents Texas A&M and Missouri. Clemson comes into this game hoping it has a spot in the ACC Championship Game next weekend, depending on the results of conference games this weekend.

NCAAF odds have Clemson as a 2½-point favorite in this contest. Taking South Carolina to get the straight-up win gets you +105 odds on the moneyline, while the Tigers are listed at -125. The over/under for the rivalry game has been set at 49 points.

2 Reasons We Expect An Upset In South Carolina vs Clemson

1. Gamecocks on a Roll With Some Big Wins

South Carolina has been solid all season, with its only three losses coming against LSU, Ole Miss and Alabama. The Gamecocks suffered a three-point loss to LSU after holding the lead for much of the game due to an injury to quarterback LaNorris Sellers. The two-point loss to the Crimson Tide came after a two-point conversion attempt in the final minute failed.

Sellers missed one game due to his injury, but the freshman has been fantastic since, throwing for 2,110 yards and 17 touchdowns while also rushing for 489 yards and five scores. Keep him in mind for NCAA player prop bets.

He has been especially hot of late, throwing 12 touchdowns in the last four games while getting sacked just three times. Sellers had trouble avoiding sacks in the first six games of the season, getting taken down at least two times in each and 25 times in total.

Clemson’s defense has recorded 28 sacks on the season, so Sellers is going to be at his best in avoiding the rush on Saturday. The Tigers have also forced 20 turnovers by opponents, which could turn this game around if they’re able to add to that.

Sellers’ hot streak includes the team’s wins over ranked opponents Texas A&M and Missouri, and we like him to keep it up against the Tigers’ defense. The freshman’s playmaking ability is definitely a big factor in our college football predictions for this game.

2. Tigers Struggle Against Better Opponents

Clemson has a gaudy record, but it has been built against a number of lesser opponents in online betting. Only one of the Tigers’ victories have come against a team that currently has a winning record, and that win against Pittsburgh was only by four points.

Junior quarterback Cade Klubnik has put up some great numbers – 2,761 passing yards, 29 passing touchdowns – but again, those have mainly been against teams that won’t be going bowling this season. In the Tigers’ two losses – to Georgia and Louisville – Klubnik had just one touchdown pass and one interception.

Per South Carolina vs Clemson stats, the Tigers’ offensive line has struggled to protect Klubnik of late as well. Throwing out last week’s win over The Citadel, Klubnik has been sacked at least twice for three straight games against conference opponents, including five against Pittsburgh and four against Virginia Tech.

South Carolina’s defense ranks seventh in the SEC, allowing 200.3 yards per game and picking off 12 passes by opposing quarterbacks. The Gamecocks will be coming for Klubnik on Saturday, hoping to take him down or fluster him into mistakes.

This game will be intense, and we like South Carolina’s experience of beating ranked opponents to be the difference. Take the Gamecocks to pull our Upset of the Week in college football picks.
