The good news is that Michigan State has a chance to go 2-0 in the Big Ten for the first time since 2021. The bad news is that third-ranked Ohio State is coming to East Lansing for a Saturday night affair. This is the ninth time in the last 10 meetings that the sports betting odds have the Buckeyes as a massive double-digit favorite against Michigan State.

Ohio State vs Michigan State: 3 Betting Predictions

1. Can Spartans Slow Down OSU Running Game?

Only Indiana and Northwestern allowed more rushing yards per game among Big Ten teams a season ago than Michigan State. The Spartans have made strides in that area, going from allowing 4.1 yards per carry to 2.6 in the last year. Will that factor into the college football picks for this matchup?

The Spartans did allow a season-high 152 rushing yards in a loss to Boston College last week. With all due respect to the Eagles, they didn’t have the luxury of handing the ball off to Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson.

Judkins is averaging 9.3 yards per carry with Henderson at 8.6 yards per rushing attempt for the Buckeyes. The last time Ohio State played at Spartan Stadium, it ran through the overmatched Michigan State defense for 237 rushing yards. If Michigan State doesn’t put up some resistance, this game could head in a similar direction to their recent matchups.

2. Ball Security a Concern for MSU

Michigan State walked into a difficult environment last week. The game at Boston College was the annual Red Bandanna Game held in honor of Welles Crowther, a Boston College graduate who is credited with saving the lives of more than 10 people in the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center before he perished.

The emotion that Boston College played with was a key factor in the 23-19 win over the visiting Spartans.

Michigan State’s four turnovers contributed to the first loss for the season for the Spartans. While Boston College only scored seven points off the four turnovers, repeating that feat against one of the best offenses in the country could be a recipe for a blowout loss at home.

Michigan State’s 10 giveaways are the most in the Big Ten – only Auburn has turned the ball over more frequently among Power-4 conference teams. Keep an eye on the NCAA football news as receivers Antonio Gates and Jaron Glover are both questionable for Michigan State.

3. Take the Over in Ohio State vs Michigan State Matchup

It has been eight years since the Spartans covered the college football spread as a home underdog of at least 20 points. The Spartans have been outscored 150-32 the last three times the visiting team was favored by at least 20 points. Five of the last six times that Michigan State was a double-digit underdog at home, the game landed over the total.

Before making college football predictions, keep in mind that Ohio State has failed to cover in its last three games as a 20-point favorite on the road. The Buckeyes are 22-1 outright in their previous 23 games when favored on the road. With the opening moneyline odds at -2500, there is little reward for picking the Buckeyes to win the game outright.

Ohio State has scored 49 and 52 points in its last two trips to East Lansing. Don’t be surprised to see the Buckeyes approach that number on Saturday. Taking the game to go over the 48-point total could be the best way to proceed.
