The Big Ten wanted huge matchups outside of Ohio State vs Michigan when it expanded its membership prior to this season, and now it has one. The No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes travel west to face the No. 3 Oregon Ducks in a showdown of unbeaten teams.
They are among three teams tied for second place in the Big Ten at 2-0 (along with Penn State), with Indiana sitting on top of the standings with a 3-0 mark in league play. This game doesn’t quite have the significance it might have had before the College Football Playoff field expanded to 12 teams, but it’s still a biggie.
The college football lines have made the visiting Buckeyes 3½-point favorites. Ohio State is getting -105 odds when giving the 3½ points and Oregon is -115 when getting those points. Betting on the moneyline will get you OSU at -155 and the Ducks at +134. The over/under for the game has been set at 54 points.
Let’s take a closer look at this key game and make some NCAA football picks as to what will happen.

Ohio State vs Oregon Odds and Spread
Best 3 Factors When Betting Ohio State vs Oregon
1. Buckeyes Tough on Both Sides of the Ball
Ohio State lost some key players from last year’s dynamic offense, but the Buckeyes can still put up some points in a hurry. But it’s the defense that has set this team apart this season, with the Buckeyes ranked first in the country in scoring defense at 6.8 points allowed per game.
Ohio State is allowing opponents to rush for just 72.6 yards per game, which is going to be key against Oregon after Oregon Ducks running back Jordan James ran for a career-high 166 yards and a touchdown in a win over Michigan State last weekend.
Defensive end JT Tuimoloau leads the Buckeyes with three sacks but, as usual, coach Ryan Day has loads of talent and rotates players in and out of the lineup throughout the game. Ohio State will certainly be looking for turnover opportunities against Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel after he threw a pair of end-zone picks against the Spartans last week.
Offensively, the Ohio State Buckeyes struggled in the first half against Iowa last week, managing just seven points, yet they still finished with 35 points in an easy victory. Quarterback Will Howard has been very good in his first season at OSU after transferring from Kansas State, throwing for 1,248 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Buckeyes wide receiver Jeremiah Smith has six touchdown catches among his 23 receptions this season, amassing 453 yards, and has made college football news with some spectacular one-handed catches. Emeka Egbuka leads OSU with 30 catches, gaining 433 yards through the air and scoring five times.
2. Ducks Have Plenty of Offensive Weapons
If this game comes down to experience at the quarterback position, Oregon might as well be declared the winner. Gabriel is in his sixth season of college football, throwing for over 3,100 yards in four of those previous campaigns at UCF and Oklahoma.
Gabriel is completing a career-best 77.8% of his passes with the Ducks this season, passing for 1,449 yards and 11 touchdowns. As stated earlier, he had two passes intercepted last week against Michigan State, but he threw just one pick prior to that contest.
Gabriel can also run the ball when needed, amassing 71 yards and scoring three times. But he’d rather use James, who really hit his stride last week, rushing for 151 yards in the first half alone.
Still, if the Ducks are going to keep up with the potent Buckeyes in this one, they’ll need a big game from Gabriel and his receivers.
Senior Tez Johnson is the most dangerous of those pass catchers, leading the team with 43 receptions for 395 yards and five touchdowns. He has had double-digit receptions in the last two games and in three of the Ducks’ five contests this season.
The college football predictions favor the Ducks, but they’ll need to earn it on offense to live up to those.
3. Ducks Get First Huge Big Ten Win
This kind of game is what Oregon signed up for when it made the move to the Big Ten, and it will represent well against the Buckeyes. The Ducks got a win in Columbus, Ohio, in the last matchup between these two teams in 2021, and coach Dan Lanning knows how important this game is for establishing Oregon as a contender in its new conference.
“There’s a reason they’re one of the best teams in the country, so it’s going to be a great challenge for us,” Lanning said.
Ohio State has struggled against Michigan in the last couple of years and wants to re-establish itself as the best of the Big Ten. But traveling out west for this game isn’t going to be easy for the Buckeyes.
We expect a tight game with plenty of points, but in the end, we’ve got Oregon winning this game outright. Make your bet online on this game on the home-standing Ducks.
