Stumbling Big 12 Teams Look to Bounce Back

Defensive Struggles Spell Trouble for Two Teams

A pair of teams who have faced defensive difficulties recently will match up when the Oklahoma State Cowboys meet the Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday.

Oklahoma State is 6-2 with a 3-2 conference record. However, the Cowboys have dropped two of their last three games due to a lack of defense. In the Cowboys’ two losses, teams scored an average of 45.5 points, while Texas scored 34 points in Oklahoma State’s last win.

Oklahoma State is last in the Big 12 in yards allowed, with opponents averaging 455.3 yards a game, and in the bottom two in points, as teams average 31.1 points against the Cowboys.

Kansas has also struggled to stop teams, placing it at the bottom of the conference. The Jayhawks’ 439.1 yards per game allowed is in the bottom two, and their 30.6 points is in the bottom three.

The Jayhawks are coming off a bye, though teams have averaged 43.5 points against them in their last two games, each resulting in Kansas losses, leaving them with a 5-3 overall record and a 2-3 conference record.

Oklahoma State Gets Blanked

Although Oklahoma State has had a strong offense, it didn’t show up in the Cowboys’ last game.

The Cowboys have averaged 39.1 points a game this season, second in the Big 12, and 435.6 yards a game, seventh in the conference. However, they struggled against Kansas State.

The Wildcats were able to hold Oklahoma State scoreless, with the Cowboys managing 217 total yards.

Both the passing and ground games were unable to get much going for Oklahoma State.

The Cowboys, who normally average 294.4 passing yards a game, had 163 air yards, while Oklahoma State’s 54 yards on the ground was a far cry from its 141.3 rushing yard average.

Oklahoma State’s offense will have to show improvement to keep up with a high-scoring Kansas offense.

Kansas’ QB Toss Up

Though Kansas got out to a strong 5-0 start, the Jayhawks have stumbled, falling in their last three games.

Kansas’ defense has played a big role in its recent losses. However, the Jayhawks have also been without their starting quarterback, Jalon Daniels, who led them to an undefeated start.

Daniels started the season throwing for 1,072 yards, 11 touchdowns, and one interception while also rushing for 341 yards and five touchdowns. He was injured in Week 6 against TCU.

Backup Jason Bean stepped up in his place, throwing for 783 yards, nine touchdowns, and three interceptions while running for 119 yards and two touchdowns.

Although the Jayhawks fell in each of the two games Bean started, he and the offense scored 93 points in the five halves led by Bean, while the defense gave up 115 points.

With Kansas coming off the bye and Daniels practicing (he is listed first on the depth chart, though Bean is also a possibility to start once again,) the offense should be in good hands with whoever Kansas decides to go with. However, the defense must improve to keep the Jayhawks in the game.

Oklahoma State vs Kansas Prediction

Although Oklahoma State was embarrassed a week ago against Kansas State, the Cowboys aren’t likely to allow the same thing to happen twice.

Kansas may be coming off a bye and hosting. However, the Jayhawks haven’t been able to slow down many teams this season, and against a vengeful Oklahoma State, it doesn’t seem like the time to start.

These teams are statistically similar in both offense and defense, but Oklahoma State should prevail in the end with a win and cover.
