Oklahoma Bounces Back with Return of Gabriel
The Oklahoma offense had been struggling since starting quarterback Dillon Gabriel had been injured in an Oct. 1 loss to TCU. But the junior returned to the lineup for an Oct. 15 showdown against Kansas and showed how dangerous the Sooners can be, as they scored 52 points in a win over the Jayhawks.
“I love seeing our guys in victory formation there at the end,” Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables said after the win over Kansas. “It was a good, hard fought win, dragging ourselves off the mat and getting back on the saddle.”
Gabriel was fantastic against Kansas, throwing for 403 yards and two touchdowns as well as running 10 times for 37 yards and a score. Gabriel has thrown for 1,618 yards and 13 touchdowns this season despite being sidelined for a game-plus in concussion protocol.
Wide receiver Marvin Mims had a big game against Kansas as well, making nine catches for 106 yards. He leads the Sooners with 32 receptions for 542 yards and three touchdowns.
Iowa State Solid On D, Struggling On Offense
The Iowa State defense has been one of the most stouts in college football this season, ranking sixth in the country in scoring defense at just 15.14 points per game. Unfortunately, while many of the other teams sitting that high in the rankings are having winning seasons, the Cyclones’ offense hasn’t been able to do enough to get wins for the team.
Iowa State is averaging just 22.9 points per game, which falls to just 16.2 points in Big 12 play. The Cyclones found a big of rhythm against Texas in their last contest but still fell, 24-21.
Quarterback Hunter Dekkers had a big game against the Longhorns, finishing with 329 yards and two touchdowns passing while also leading the Cyclones with 30 rushing yards and a score. The sophomore has passed for 1,843 yards and 13 touchdowns this season, but he also has seven interceptions, which have been costly.
If Iowa State is going to put points on the board in this one, it will need another big game from senior wide receiver Xavier Hutchinson. Hutchinson had 10 catches for 154 yards against Texas, giving him 67 receptions for 758 yards and five touchdowns on the season.
