Oklahoma Sooners
Oklahoma was stunned by Kansas State at home, losing 41-34 to the Wildcats. Kansas State lost at home to Tulane the previous week as a 14-point home favorite in the sportsbook.
The Wildcats were clearly looking ahead past Tulane to Oklahoma Sooners, but even if you acknowledge that, they were still very bad on offense.
Quarterback Adrian Martinez had a terrible game for Kansas State against Tulane. No one expected him to light up Oklahoma’s defense. As a passer and especially as a runner, Martinez was able to make Oklahoma’s defense look slow and inadequate.
The Sooners did not take the right angles in pursuit of Martinez and other Kansas State skill position players. Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables was the defensive coordinator at Clemson for a decade under head coach Dabo Swinney.
He was a former defensive coordinator at Oklahoma who coached in a national championship game.
He has a history of doing great work as a defensive strategist, so the idea that Martinez would eviscerate his defense was a huge surprise.
Oklahoma has to overcome that loss to Kansas State and make significant adjustments on the defensive side of the ball.
TCU Horned Frogs
The Horned Frogs were picked by a number of college football analysts to finish last in the Big 12 Conference.
Beating Colorado and SMU might not indicate that the Horned Frogs are ready to exceed expectations, but a 3-0 start certainly is a positive sign for this team.
Led by first-year head coach Sonny Dykes, who came from SMU to coach TCU Horned Frogs, the Frogs just defeated Dykes’ former team in a 42-34 shootout.
It mirrored a lot of the recent meetings in the series when Dykes was on the other sideline coaching SMU. TCU scored 28 first-half points and was able to get its offense to function at a high level.
Given the struggles of Oklahoma’s defense against Kansas State, TCU has a reason to think its offense can post some big numbers versus the Sooners. It will need to do just that if it wants to win this game outright.
