Penn State

Senior QB Sean Clifford continues to be the little engine that couldn’t for Penn State. He’s good enough to get it to the top of the hill but lacks the skill to get the Nittany Lions over the hump.

Time and time again, Clifford stumbles in a big spot, and we think this Michigan game will be more of the same.

Despite leading Penn State to a 5-0 start, Clifford has just 1,030 yards passing with a TD-to-INT ratio of 9/2 and a QBR of 65.4. Not bad, but far from great. In his last start against a Big 10 rival, Clifford went 10-for-20 with 140 yards against Northwestern with a touchdown and interception. For reference, Northwestern’s passing defense ranks 106th in yards per play, while the Wolverines rank 2nd.

Michigan

Despite dropping from the No. 4 spot in the rankings, the Wolverines are an objectively better team from top to bottom. Starting under center, J.J. McCarthy has one of the best QBRs in the nation (82.1) and one interception in 59 attempts. He is coming off his first 300-yard game against Indiana in Week 5 and faces the 88th-ranked passing defense in terms of yards per game.

PSU has one of the best rushing defenses in yards per game (82.2) but has yet to face off against a back of Blake Corum’s skill level. The Junior has 735 on 118 carries with 11 touchdowns this season. He is the focus of this offense and will be the X-factor in Michigan winning this pivotal game.

Penn State vs Michigan Prediction

Penn State is far from a bad team, but the Wolverine enter Week 6 as the fifth-best scoring offense and fourth-best scoring defense in the nation. The Nittany Lions can’t come close to those figures. Additionally, we are suspicious of Clifford in this spot. He continues to get Penn State right up to the finish line, only to fall short.
