We’ve been hitting on our Upset of the Week predictions of late, taking Kansas to knock off Colorado two weeks ago, then correctly taking underdog South Carolina to upset Clemson a week ago. Can that success carry over to Championship Week in college football? We think it will.

This week’s SEC Championship Game pick is also an upset, with two teams that are all but locked into the College Football Playoff field. The No. 7 Georgia Bulldogs take on the No. 3 Texas Longhorns in a rematch of a contest from earlier this season.

Georgia won that game on the road, 30-15, handing Texas its last loss of the regular season. The Bulldogs are making their fourth straight SEC Championship Game appearance, though they’re looking for just their second win in that stretch.

The college football lines have the Longhorns as a 2½-point favorite in this one. The over/under for the contest has been set at 49 points.

Georgia vs Texas SEC Championship Game Analysis

1, Earlier Win Will Give Bulldogs Confidence, Make Georgia (+125) Your Pick on Saturday

Georgia has played in its share of close games this season, including last week’s comeback win in eight overtimes over Georgia Tech. The Bulldogs certainly aren’t lacking in experience in big games and have had success against top opponents throughout their recent championship run.

Coach Kirby Smart will certainly want his team to get out to the fast start that they did in the early meeting with Texas when the Bulldogs took a 23-0 halftime lead. That type of start hasn’t been the norm for Georgia, falling behind 28-0 to Alabama in its first loss of the campaign and 17-0 at halftime just last week against the Yellow Jackets.

Obviously, defense is key in this one, especially after the Bulldogs allowed 563 yards of total offense to the Yellow Jackets. Georgia was able to shut down the Texas offense in the first meeting, limiting the Longhorns to just 259 yards and forcing four turnovers.

And Smart is going to make sure his players know they’re the underdog. He certainly knew all about everyone picking Texas in the first meeting and let his players know as well.

“Nobody gave us a chance. Everybody doubted us,” Smart said after winning the regular-season matchup with the Longhorns. “Did you watch the (pregame) show this morning? I didn’t because I was in meetings, but I got 8,000 texts about it.”

Georgia seems to play better when it’s the underdog, which it hasn’t been in the last few years. Playing to win the SEC Championship Game after getting upset by Alabama as the favorite last season is going to be a big motivator as well.

We have a number of college football predictions for this game, but the biggest is the Bulldogs coming out on top.

2. Longhorns Not Playing Like a Top Seed, Bet on an Upset

Texas was the only SEC school to suffer just one loss this season, but it’s not because the Longhorns have been dominating the competition for the most part. Since the loss to Georgia, Texas has won five straight, though outside of a 49-17 rout of Florida, the Longhorns’ average winning margin has been 10 points.

Quarterback Quinn Ewers hasn’t been putting up the big numbers many expected him to when he was listed as one of the top Heisman picks earlier in the season. He’s coming off a 218-yard passing effort – his highest total in three games – with a touchdown and an interception in last week’s win over Texas A&M.

The Longhorns’ lack of explosive production is going to put the pressure on the team’s defense to come up big against the Bulldogs. They couldn’t do that in the first meeting, especially against the Georgia ground attack. Running back Trevor Etienne had 87 yards and three touchdowns in that game, though he won’t play in this contest due to a rib injury.

Still, quarterback Carson Beck has been very good of late and wants to make up for last season’s loss in the SEC title tilt. Beck has passed for 3,429 yards and 28 touchdowns this season, including 941 yards and 11 touchdowns over the last three games.

Georgia vs Texas SEC Championship Game Pick

The pressure is going to be on the Longhorns in this one, both literally and figuratively, and that’s going to get to them. We like Georgia to make some college football news with the upset of Texas.
