  • Texas shouldn’t need very long to score against Mississippi State this weekend.
  • Oklahoma is a solid bet to cover as a road favorite against Auburn.

One of the benefits of Texas and Oklahoma joining the SEC – other than adding two more ranked teams to the best college football conference in the country – is that the scheduling format in the SEC had to be altered. Thanks to the SEC moving on from its two-division format, college football fans and those who bet online are presented with the gift that is a rare regular-season showdown between Georgia and Alabama.

Florida and Mississippi State opting to play very little defense was the only thing that kept us from a second consecutive 3-0 record in picking weekly SEC best bets. Let’s see how things transpire with conference games on the docket in the SEC.

When looking at the college football news, there are still six undefeated SEC teams. Missouri and Tennessee don’t play this weekend while either Alabama or Georgia will emerge out of the clash of the SEC titans still undefeated. The showdown between the Crimson Tide and the Bulldogs is one of three SEC games with a single-digit spread.

Things get underway at noon ET on Saturday when Ole Miss welcomes Kentucky to Oxford.

Despite Missouri falling from seventh to 11th in the Associated Press poll and from eighth to 11th in the American Football Coaches Association, there are still five SEC teams in the top 10 in both national polls led by No. 1 Texas and No. 2 Georgia.

When looking at the college football futures odds, five of the top 10 teams in the odds of winning the national championship hail from the SEC.

Let’s take a look at some of the bets to consider as four SEC teams are home favorites in Week 5.

Top 3 SEC Bets for Week 5

1. Oklahoma to Cover Spread as Road Favorite vs Auburn

It is hard to know what to make of this year’s Auburn team. The Tigers looked pretty impressive against overmatched Alabama A&M and New Mexico teams. It has been a different story against teams from the Power-4 conferences.

Auburn lost at home to California when listed by the college football predictions as the 11.5-point favorite and fell at home again to Arkansas in its SEC opener.

After scoring on its first drive against Cal, in Auburn’s next 20 possessions versus the Bears and the Razorbacks, the Tigers had one touchdown, nine turnovers and seven punts. Now comes a game against an Oklahoma team that was shut down by the Tennessee defense last week.

Oklahoma should have more success running its offense against the Tigers and we like the Sooners to cover as a 2-point college football spread as a road favorite.

2. Georgia vs Alabama Top Prop Pick

Georgia coming into Tuscaloosa for the first time since 2020? This should be fun. The last time the SEC heavyweights met in the regular season, all eight touchdowns were scored by players currently in the NFL.

Alabama trailed by seven points with 23 seconds left in the first half before the Crimson Tide scored the game’s final 24 points in the 41-24 win.

The Crimson Tide are looking just fine in the post-Nick Saban era with 63, 42 and 40 points scored in the first three games. However, Alabama will not be facing Western Kentucky, South Florida or Wisconsin on Saturday night. The college football picks have the Crimson Tide as a rare underdog at home.

Georgia’s defense looks nasty once again and this has the feeling of a game that could come down to the final possession or two so don’t look for either team to string together three consecutive scores.

Will there be three straight scores by either team – NO (+202)

3. Bet on Early Score in Mississippi State vs Texas Game

Mississippi State allowed 45 points and more than 503 yards in total offense to a bad Florida team last week. The Bulldogs allowed more than six yards per rushing attempt and almost 10 yards per pass play.

What is in store for them again when they make their way to Austin, Texas, to meet up with the top-ranked Texas Longhorns on Saturday? The BetUS sportsbook odds list Texas as a 39-point favorite on Saturday. We aren’t ready to go there.

Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers is dealing with an abdominal strain that leaves his status for the game up in the air, so it could be another start for the much-ballyhooed Arch Manning.

Manning, the nephew of former Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks Eli and Peyton Manning, had a pretty mediocre showing last week in a 51-3 win over Louisiana Monroe. Manning completed just 51.7% of his passes for 258 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in his first career collegiate start.

Mississippi State’s defensive passer rating of 148.5 is the worst in the SEC so expect the Longhorns to score early and often against the Bulldogs. Go with the first score to take place in the first five minutes.
